I got the renewel form for my boat registration yesterday, the lower left conor was riped off somewhere in the postal route. It shows the reg. amt. I am wondering if I send this in will they renew my registration?

I would call the DMV and talk to them about it.....

I got mine yesterday too.... now I just need to get the darn things sent back in, before the issue slips my mind until April.

I suppose there is always the very small chance that for some reason something happens that means we don't launch the boat this year. But the renewal isn't a major amount, I prefer to just deal with it and be ready for ice-out, even if it comes in February

I agree! Who knows, we may be boating in March next year!!

Got my boat registration stickers last week. They are pretty deep red for 2012!

I'll do it ASAP this year because I need to then send a copy to Safety Services in order to get my mooring permit. Last year I forgot and, as a result, didn't get my mooring stickers until mid July.

They may run out of licenses if you don't register early.

My personal experiences tell me if I don't get this out of the way early... I end up at the lake on a beautiful Friday evening when I really want to go out for a cruise, and have to wait until Saturday morning, to go to the marina, to get my stickers.

Additionally by sending the registration in early I avoid having to pay the agent fee which I would pay at a marina to register the boat. This never bothered me when I only had one registration, but now that I have multiple and I pay an agent fee for each one, the additional fee really kind of ticks me off.

As for worrying about having spent the money and then end up in a position where the boat doesn't make it in the water.... Well let me say this, it would have to be a major life altering event, to keep me away from the water and not have the ability to splash the boat at least once. At which point, I would also probably be more worried about the life altering event then obout having spent 100$ or 200$ unnecessarily.

As a Frugal OLD Yankee, I have found that a heat gun..carefully applied... will remove the upper layers of stickers down to the sticker that matches the new color sticker. Voilà.

(A little French lingo.) I have not had to get a new sticker since 1981.

Pretty easy to do when the state only issues 4 basic colors and the hardest thing to read is the year they are good for. Brilliant!

We always send for the reg just as soon as it comes in and then when we rec. the new one we put it in a location that we will know right where to go and get it in the spring. Ya, sure, where in hell did I put the frigging registration hon. Three days later it appears in the wifes hand and she says it was right where you put it.

Does that happen to anyone else????

What timing for this thread!
Can anyone suggest an approximate cost for the registration for an older boat.
I'm guessing late 80's or early 90's, 17'-20' bowrider with a 4.3 or smaller I/O. This seems to be what I can find in the 4k and under price range. We are located in Moultonborough.

Also, what type of insurance is required? I will trailer the boat about 1/2 mile from our house to a boat launch, and enjoy Lake Winni. At this time we have no plans for traveling to other lakes via trailer , incase that might have an effect on the policy.

We will be as new to boating as they come, and are looking to see what expenses we can expect.

probably about 60 bucks.

I don't think insurance is mandatory but as inexpensive as ~100 bucks a year it's worth the piece of mind to have it. The big thing you need coverage for is liability.

You'll want to talk to your insurance company, sometimes they require you carry coverage, for example my umbrella policy requires that I carry insurance on the boat. Just something to think about.

As for insurance you definitely want insurance in this day and age. With a boat in the size you are referencing, you might be able to add it as a rider to your homeowners policy. In which case the cost is pretty low... Or you can chose to have a stand alone policy for the boat... Your best bet is to discuss the issue with your insurance agent.

I personally have a stand alone policy for my boat and jet ski... and it costs me a few Hundred dollars every year....

The other recommendation when looking at the insurance aspects of owning a boat, is your tow vehicle policy. I have seen some strange things... and have found through my own investigating, that some policy don't adequately cover the vehicle in tow....which is way you want a boat policy that covers the boat and trailer....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the towing vehicle insurance only cover the trailer being towed and NOT the contents?? The boat, tractor and/or snowmobiles or whatever is in the trailer need their own insurance???

That's what my agent told me. The trailer ONLY is tied to my truck's policy.

This is true in most cases...

There are caveats though.... I have seen policies, that don't even cover the trailer... I have also seen policies that cover the trailer and contents up to a certain amount....

And I know my current policy states that I can tow things and it doesn't void my policy... and my vehicle has continued coverage through the policy. My insurance covers liability for towing. I was told I'd need additional coverage for the trailer itself and/or contents.

correct in most cases and the reason is: When the trailer is attached to a covered insured vehicle the liability (or damages it cases) is covered by the auto liability. The second it disconnects from the trailer hitch it is on its own for liability. Now physical damage for the trailer requires to cover itself on its own could either be on your auto policy or your boat/trailer policy

Ken was right I renewed my reg. last year and misplaced the sticker and went to guilford, Nice people and I will take this in Feb and do the same. No not loose the decal and by the way I have yet to find it.

However, when I submitted my gas slips for the rebate last year they required the current registration with it.

Hope you all have a great christmas. Registrations would be a nice present!

Received me registration in the mail today. It was also ripped on the entire left side and was delivered in a clear envelope with an apology from the post office.
