I've heard the story about the crash on to the rocks in the Varney's as well, many many years ago.

there's also a story that that scene was done with an old sister ship to the Thayer and it needed to be rigged to destruct as the boat was to solid and bounced of the rocks. As I heard it, an I beam with a hydraulic ram was installed and planks were half cut to fracture . ..
