My son hit a submerged rock in Lake Huron over the weekend and it took out all forward power in my Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II out drive. We have some reverse power but it doesn't act right. I will be back in Moultonborough in a couple of weeks.
Could someone give advice on the best place to take it in the lakes region for repair? We have insurance and I would like to get it repaired properly. Thanks a lot! Last edited by PHDIII; 07-13-2011 at 09:09 PM. |

Might have just spun the propeller hub. Many Alphas are equipped with a sacrificial flo-torq II hub style prop. It might just need a new Derlin sleeve.
See: http://www.mercurymarine.com/propell...gies/flo-torq/ |

It would be 45 minute job to remove the broken lower unit, bolt on a brand new SEI 116 lower unit, fill it with lube, and be done with it. They cost $845. Just a thought. |

I used an SEI drive when I replaced mine a few years back. The first year it was a bit noisy as the gears broke in, after that it has been perfect
![]() I just noticed that they now make Bravo replacements and Cobra Conversion kits. They really have filled a niche. http://www.sterndrive.cc/ |

Thanks guys, you are all very helpful. I'm still in Canada (a little south of Georgian Bay however). The unfortunate part is my son knows the area very well and just drifted over the rocks while getting ready to ski....he felt terrible about it.
Do you think the local marinas would install the SEI 116 replacement or would they insist on Mercruiser replacement? |

My insurance would not cover it, but would have covered your loss. |

I had Shep Browns do mine and it was quick and as painless as it could be. I give them a call.

OK, thanks to all for the ideas. I'll make some calls when I return home. I'm relieved that there is an easy solution. Thanks again.
