Default New McDonald's?

I understand McDonald's in Laconia is proposing to build a new restaurant at their present site on Union Avenue. I was told there was an article about it in one of the local newspapers recently. Does anyone know which paper and the date it appeared? I apparently missed it.

The gentleman who invented the Quarter Pounder, The Frozen McDonald's French fry, the apple and cherry pies, and the fillet o fish sandwich died this week. He was 81.

Born in Lawrence, MA

Al Bernardin, inventor of the Quarter Pounder, dies at 81

By MATTHEW ARTZ - The Argus (Fremont, Calif.)

FREMONT, Calif. -- Al Bernardin, inventor of the McDonald's Quarter Pounder, has died of a stroke. He was 81.
Bernardin, a native of Lawrence, Mass., went to work at McDonald's corporate headquarters in 1960 and quickly rose to dean of Hamburger University, McDonald's training center.
Later, as vice president of product development, he played a major role in the formation of McDonald's signature fish sandwich, french fries, and hot apple and cherry pies.
But Bernardin's claim to fame came in 1971, when, as a franchise owner in Fremont, he introduced the Quarter Pounder, with the prophetic slogan, "Today Fremont, tomorrow the world."
"I felt there was a void in our menu vis-a-vis the adult who wanted a higher ratio of meat to bun," he said in 1991 while commemorating the burger's 20th anniversary.
Not all of his ideas became menu stables. McDonald's corporate office nixed the The Lite Mac - a one-fifth pounder consisting of 15 percent less beef fat - and the McGobbler, a sandwich made of ground turkey meat.
"He always wanted to make things better," said Bernardin's son, Mark, who owns three McDonald's in Fremont. "He spent two years making prototypes to spread butter on corn-on-the-cob."
While the Quarter Pounder became an international sensation, Bernardin said his most important contribution to fast-food fare is the frozen french fry.
"Before that, the (restaurants) had to store potatoes in the basement," Mark Bernardin said. "It was a real pain."
Bernardin moved to Fremont in 1970 after buying two company-owned franchises. At his height, he owned nine franchises throughout southern Alameda County and became a local philanthropist.

They should buy the place where Burger King was, renovate that, or raze it and build a new one, that way they can remain open at their current location while construction is underway across the street. Then sell off the current location. That way we can stop and get a burger while on the boat again!

The article in the LaDaSun said the old Laconia-McD will stay open for business while the new one is constructed on the same large lot.

Believe that the Laconia-McD is owned by the same company that owns the Meredith-McD. Meredith McD was totally remodelled with big upgrades about 2 1/2 years ago and it seems to do very good biz, so could be they want similar results in Laconia.

What the Laconia-McD has going for it; it's right next door to Laconia-Saint Vincent De Paul second hand store! Go there to find yourself a Taylor Made boat fender-bumper for one dollar or a type-lV throwable cushion with an azimuth imprinted into the vinyl!

Saint Vincent's must have a direct donation link from deceased rich waterfront folks from Governor's Island, or someplace like Rye?

Default New McD.'s - My 2 Cents

If being next to St. Vincent de Paul's is a plus, I would say its proximity to the city pumping station to the south is a minus. Meander down to the lower end of the parking lot on a humid summer evening, when pumps are working at capacity sending volumes of sewage on its way, and you will get the drift of what I mean. Constructing their new restaurant closer to it, could bring a new meaning to the definition of a Happy Meal.

I would have hoped that the design of a new McDonald's might have been one to enhance the appearance of "the strip" along Union Avenue, rather than maintaining the same boxy style and garish colors. The new D.Q. and Dunkin' Donuts buildings are certainly more appealing and a better fit for a New England community.

I understand that would be an on-going, big tax hit....lake front vs non-lake front.

One would think the Laconia zoning board and building dept would be right on top of requesting McD's to come up with an appealing design.

The new DQ is attractive.

How's the new Mcd supposed to look?

Review thread 2 and open the paper to page 8 and view the picture there. It states that they want to build as shown.

That one photo with the red & yellow McDonald's does not seem to be out of place for that area of Union Ave. Just about every business; St Vincent dePaul, the former Fitzgerald car dealership, the former Burger King, the former Chrysler dealer, Amerigas, KFC, the Hot tub & stove store, HK Motorsports, and the carwash are all pretty much boxey commercial buidlings that are short on design and detail.

The McDonald's photo does not show it from the front, but it looks to have more design features than all the neighboring buildings on Union Ave.

Believe the Meredith McDonald's was built in 1987 and the newer designs now are more red, white & yellow, higher visibility as opposed to low-key blending brown. Hey, that's the way the hamburger gets fried.....whatcha gonna do?

Laconia now has a Walgreen's, a CVS, a Rite Aid, and another CVS just over its' border with Gilford and each commercial pharmacy is a design common to each drug chain. Probably, Laconia is just pleased as punch with any billion dollar brand name business that wants to build in Laconia and is not too picky with their design requests. Just build the building....hire employees.....pay property taxes.....and thank God it is not a methadone clinic! Drugstores in Laconia are good as long as they are good drugstores!

And McDonald's.....come on....everybody just loves a McDonalds big fat quarter pounder w/ cheese!
