just picked up a 14' aluminum boat with a trolling motor. Plan on fishing in spots other than Winni next year for a change. Do I need to register the boat even if it all I have is the trolling motor?

hope this helps,
You must have a New Hampshire Certificate of Registration and validation decals to legally operate your vessel on public waters in New Hampshire. This includes motorboats of any size (including those with electric motors), and sailboats or sailboards 12 ft. in length or longer. The only exceptions are: Sailboats and sailboards under 12 feet in length Other small, non-motorized vessels such as canoes and kayaks Vessels registered in other states using New Hampshire waters for 30 or fewer consecutive days Vessels owned or operated by the U.?S. government |

GTO,
Unless you plan to fish within a 100 acre area of Winni, you may want to re-think the trolling motor only option. I have a 14' with a 10 hp and many times I need it all to get back to shore. |

Go for a 15hp on a 14'er alum vee-hull. Baaack, baack, back in the days of olde, before Winnipesaukee had jetskis, I can recollect seein' all sorts of teenyboppers and fishin'-geezers out there in their 14' Alumacrafts runnin' an EvinRude 15. Even remember one olde guy who used to carry big rocks and bags of concrete mix, all loaded onto that 14'er, for doing mason work out on the islands.

As far as I know, You have to register anything that has any kind of motor. If you put a trolling motor on a canoe, You have to register it.

Any boat over 12’ has to be registered, motor or no.
The electric motor has to be registered as well. When you register it, you have to choose the boat it will be used on. They get you coming and going. |

"Any boat over 12’ has to be registered, motor or no"
Does that include canoes and kayaks? |

See Spanky's post above. Canoes and kayaks do not require registration unless you put a motor on them.

There seems to be a little confusion on which craft are exempt from registration here in New Hampshire. Here is the pertinent RSA governing exemption....
TITLE XXII NAVIGATION; HARBORS; COAST SURVEY CHAPTER 270-E VESSEL REGISTRATION AND NUMBERING Section 270-E:4 270-E:4 Exemptions From Registration. – The following vessels shall be exempt from registration in this state: I. Sailboats under 12 feet in length, rowboats and canoes powered by sail, oars, paddles, or other human power. Any vessel which has an inboard or outboard motor shall not be exempt from registration except as provided in paragraph II. II. Vessels registered in another state or country temporarily using the waters of this state for not more than 30 consecutive days. III. Vessels owned or operated by the United States government. Source. 1990, 229:1, eff. Jan. 1, 1991. |
