I was a little disappointed in the corn I got from Beans & Greens today. Being a huge B&G fan, I was thrilled when I heard their corn was ready. Well I have to say, it wasn't all that good and to be honest the corn we got earlier in the year from Shop & Save which came from Florida was much better...
I hope to find some good local corn soon! Dan |

We had Beans and Greens corn 9 days ago and it was the best we have ever had. I bought it 30 minutes before I steamed it and it was excellent. We had house guests who still talk about how great the corn was.

I have to wonder if the strange weather we've had this summer didn't have something to do with the quality of the corn?
My dad always (always!) grew butter and sugar corn - it was yellow and white - and almost always sweet and yummy. But I recall times it wasn't as good because we hadn't had enough rain or enough warm weather. Considering the heatwave and now the late-summer like weather we're having here now in NH, I wonder if it's not all impacting the produce. I know some friends of mine on Facebook have been talking about the lateness of the gardens - no ripe tomatoes, etc. |

I ate 3 of my Heirlooms tomatoes a couple of weeks ago but won't have any more harvestable "maters" for another couple of weeks or so. All my plants are in containers so I'm able to manage the water and nutrients. They're all over 5 or 6 feet tall and very robust and with plenty of immature tomatoes but it will be awhile before I will be able to appreciate the fruits of my labors.

We picked it up around noon time today. The girl was just putting out fresh ears and we were taking them.
Funny thing we also picked up some native corn last week from a local farm in Litchfield that was not that good at all. Don't know what's going on, but I am going to need a local corn fix pretty soon! ![]() Dan |

My tomatoes are doing great! Just yesterday I picked twelve more and have another 12 or more to pick. We will have to share with the family because we won't be able to eat them all fast enough. THey are great big, juicy and sweet! YUM! But my cukes and squash are still struggling. I had a few round fat cucumbers and that's it. I have had no squash. There are a few little ones growing-if they don't die on the vine.

That is what has happened to a couple of relatives. They have had a lot of cukes but no tomatoes. It's a strange year, I guess.
Now maybe on that new house of GI we would have better luck!! ![]() |

Timely thread for me. I also got corn from B&G last Wednesday. I too was taking the corn as the girl was stocking the bin. Assumed it was just picked and was very eager to get home and try it. Quite a let down for me as well. It was ok but I guess I expected better. I also mentioned that I had better tasting corn from Hanaford a few weeks prior which I believe came from the NJ area. Love that B&G but I must say I was disappointed with the corn.

At Big Banana, we've had a varied experience this year with corn. For the past 2 weeks, we've gotten corn from one farm and it was disappointing, to say the least. This week, another of our farms supplied us with excellent corn.

Our corn is the best it has been since we bought this farm. No issues with critters yet this year too!. Last year we had porcipine issuse which led to no corn. This year we'll have an over abundance. I planted 4x what my family will eat expecting to loose some, but it is all going strong.

I am a fan of Sugar and gold corn but this year the corn is just not as good as past years. I noticed it earlier this but figured it was just picked a little early,
but the last few times the corn is a little less sweet. Not much, but noticeable when compared to prior years. Also the bountiful crop of blueberrys were not evident out on Beaver Island. They were smaller or non existent. Something was different this year. |

We buy from our favorite locals. They are all terrible this year probably due to lack of rain.
The absolute best corn we've had all year was in May - from Hannafords if you can believe it. |

I have been going to Beans & Greens for years, once in a while we stop in and get corn to see if it is going to be any good. Every time it is the same, it ends up not being that good. We can't understand why, you would figure with it being grown right there and being so fresh. I guess we will stop in again in next couple of years and see if it is the same story.

.. it was wonderful.
How do you folks cook your corn? I've always used the way my father used to cook it. 1) Rapidly boiling, lightly salted water 2) Drop the corn in... take it out in 3 minuets after the water returns to a boil. Serve immediately! Always works for me! Beans and Greens also sells "Camp Mix" The one labeled "Orginal", it is great on corn or any veggie. http://campmix.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?

If it is just picked (less than 1 hour) 3 minutes is good. If laying around for a day, try 5 to 6 minutes, or until corn is shiny.

Today's Beans and Greens corn was very good and clearly a new crop, much better than the prior two weeks.
I do wish that they would bring back the Silver Queen as an option. It is much better than the usual fare but only if it just picked. I do have some growing in the garden, looks like another two weeks. Then after the water is boiling, pick and shuck a few ears and into the pot. |

Got some yesterday at Hannaford's from Pearl Farm in Belmont. It was very good.....slightly starchy, it was probably picked the day before, but still better than what I've had recently from the area.

Glad you asked Steve as I do my mine unlike most people. Yup, microwave. Works fantastic. I have a casserole set that I put about an inch or less water in. It will hold 4 ears of corn. Put the cover on and micro away. 4 ears is about 6 minutes, 2 about 4ish. It steams the corn very nice. I haven't boiled corn in 20 years. Try it!

We soak the corn in the sink for a least an hour with the husk still on then pop them right on the grill. Easiest and best way we've found to cook it and it's much easier to shuck

I use the "NO STICK" aluminum foil (2 pats for me) and roll the cobs every 2 minutes or so. We have had some really sweet corn from EM Heath's and Ledgewood Farms this summer. |

I'm glad my opinion was verified by the grower. I'll be back for the next variety!

I take it that you tried the micro? I would never be able to tell the difference in a blindfold test. What I like is I don't have to wait for all that water to boil and also heat up the kitchen on a hot summer day. The micro boils that small amount of water real fast. I'm sure its much more economical from an electrical use standpoint also. I'm going to cook some more tonite!
