33 to be exact. I just noticed I seemed to be one of the younger members at the fest. I know at least one other poster personally that is around my age. I was just hoping that people my age that love the lake were on here as well. I notice in the poll there even seems to be some under 30, good to see!

On another note, I wasn't able to make FF -- yet again -- thought I was going to, then promised my 13-yr-old to take him to Clark's for Train weekend, not realizing there was a clash of dates at the time. :emb: I was very sorry to miss yet another one, BUT son and I had a wonderful time in Lincoln. I hope the weather in M'boro was close to as wonderful as it was in Lincoln, and it sounds like Krista did a fabulous job with the organization -- kudos to her, SteveA, rrr, and everyone who donated raffle prizes and to all who participated in the FF!:banana::cheers:

I noticed the same thing at ForumFest '08, but anticipated that the number of attendees at a September Forum Fest would include retirees: the average age of members here is probably much younger. (Many at the ForumFest '08 haven't replied as yet, making this poll somewhat more "youthful".)

Dave R, I meant no offense to anyone, I came up with the categories by what I observed at the FF. It looked to me in my humble opinion, that most at the fest, were between 40-60. According to the poll, it looks like that is true and it is the largest demographic on our site.

Well, I am 48 (just typing it makes me gag) and I live for those days on the lake.
Now, my boys are 12 and 14 and they, too, live for their days on the lake. I clearly remember thinking Lake Winnie was in the sticks, boring as all get out and the worst place ever during my teen years and early twenties. I guess we start out smart and then have a middling period when we are incredibly stupid. My boys aren't quite there yet and I hope they never get there.
Of course, having a TV and a boat helps. Didn't have those back in the 70's. We didn't even have a regular phone. We had a party line well into my high school years.

I was in an undergrad enginering class in fluid dymanics at UCONN that Friday afternoon and looking out at the steps of the student union we saw a large group assembled. Someone came down the hallway shouting "Kennedy has been shot". That Sunday morning watching live TV I saw Jack Ruby shoot Oswald. So that puts me somewhat into the 60+ group.

Have to play the "do you remember" a little
Do any of you remember...
When REALLY large numbers of what we kids called "four-motored bombers" would fly overhead..lots of times at night. They made a very deep, loud droning sound that was scary. Never realized back then I would not ever hear that sound again. That's OK, though!
When the time was announced on the radio ,it would be "It is now 8 o'clock, Eastern Wartime."
We would race home after school to listen to "Superman", "Tom Mix", "The Lone Ranger" on the radio and pray it wouldn't be too filled with static. It would stay light quite a long time at night, even in winter, because of "Eastern Wartime"
We would save up Box Tops forever and send away, along with 25 cents, for a magic ring or some marvelous artifact Superman or Tom Mix was using. We'd wait an eternity for it to arrive...and...omigod, what a piece of junk it was!! Even a kid knew it...not that you could admit it. I wonder if anyone actually saved one of them...through all these years.
Later on, there were "real cars" again on the scene. My family had one with fins, actually. It shifted with push buttons!
Cool music (!) arrived, like Bill Haley and the Comets...and you had 45's.
And, finally...my family being the last ones on the planet to get one...we had television!
Anyone remember that stuff??

I remember it all. Guess we must be of the same vintage. I, too, was a member of the Tom Mix Straight Shooters Club and there wasn't a premium I didn’t send for. Let me see, there was the Look Around Ring, the Whistling Ring and who can ever forget the Indian arrowhead that glowed in the dark? It had a magnifying glass and compass built right in. Does it get any better than that? Once on a roll with the glow-in-the-dark items, along came the spurs with the same marvelous properties. Amazing!
I believe the cost of the rings was 10 cents, but then inflation began to set in and the arrowhead and spurs were a quarter. Junk, you say? What do you expect for a dime, the Hope Diamond? To purchase all of these “can’t do without gems”, you needed a box top from Ralston cereal. Oh, how I hated that stuff, but always promised my Mom I would eat it if she would only purchase a box. Once I got my grubby little hands on the box top, the promises usually went out the window. Needless to say, it had a very long shelf life at our house. The first child at school to receive their long awaited prize was surely the most popular kid of the day and all gathered ‘round to marvel at the wonders of it all.
Thanks for the memories

I guess we in the following "Cracker JacK" generation got your leftovers ... the trinkets they couldn't sell ..... :D
Back when the only service was full service. (self service, what's that ?)
Back when air for your tires was free and they were checked while you filled up .... for $7.25 ... in the station wagon.
Back when the best gas station was the one that gave out the most S&H Green stamps.
Back when Dad went "through town" to avoid the toll on the highway ... saving $0.25.

For awhile there I was afraid nobody would remember those "way back" days.
I apologize for the "junk" comment, but I guess, when you are seven, you do expect The Hope Diamond...especially when you've waited so long for that wonderful thing to arrive! I will admit, too, that the glow-in-the-dark items were a little classier than the ring which sported that "tin can-ish" material so "one size fit all". My husband, on his lunch break at home from Mechanic Street School in Lakeport, was fortunate to discover his Whistling Ring had arrived...after waiting for the better part of forever. You are right--when he went back that afternoon he was--indeed--the Man of the Hour (for about two minutes), until the ring accidently dropped down the register! He said he threw a spectacular fit ,and all possibilities for learning ceased until the custodian somehow retrieved the ring. Yes, those were the days!

I turned 40 this year and have been on the lake for 40 summers.....(except the summer of 1994 - was in Korea serving in the Army that year. Couldn't afford a flight home.)
I am on the upper end of the 40-60 group. I have been lucky enough to have spent all of those years on the lake and still own the family place with siblings, and also our own places. I think I belong with riverrat and Joe Kerr.

I grew up in the 60's & early 70's, and remember spending summers at the Margate riding in John's cruiser, I also remember the White Owl Hotel that was across the street from the Margate and had the outdoor pool, traffic was going so slow it was no problem running across the street to swim in the unheated pool.
I also remember when Caramel Corn was available in several places on Weirs and the Ballroom was at the end of the warf. Another memory was watching David Cassidy's father and James Whitemore at the Playhouse in Gilford. Oh those memories, ones that can never be taken away with development and change.

WinnDixie - Losing that precious ring down the register can only be described as a near catastrophe, but luckily it was retrievable and life-long trauma was prevented. I must admit that the rings were not 24-carat gold, but the arrowheads and spurs were of a better quality material and workmanship. I have most of those items tucked away in a box of childhood souvenirs somewhere, and the last time I checked, the whistling ring was still operational, although a bit tarnished. I wonder how many toys of today will still be whistling along in 60 years? It was actually a good investment, as I probably could more than double my investment if I were willing to part with it and offer it for sale to a collector.
Mechanic Street School? Ah, yes I remember it well. Who can ever forget the beautiful artwork we created with love and a gob of paste? The paste incidentally came in a huge jar and was distributed to each child on a piece of arithmetic paper. It had the distinctive aroma of teaberry gum and many a student was seen licking his or her fingers after applying it to paper. The inkwells were filled from a large jug and often leaked down into our desks, ruining everything it came in contact with, including the beautiful art we had worked so hard to complete. Music class was my favorite and I still can remember many of the songs we learned. As with all things in life, there are good and bad memories associated with school days, but we survived and can now look back upon them with fondness (for the most part).

Remember when there was no Grocery Store in the Gilford area - then Dan's Star Market came with its directional arrows on the floor?
How about when the Kellerhaus was not up the hill from the Wiers?
How about when Gunstock ran the chairlifts in the summer so you could walk down the moutians?
Remember when there was no Patricks Pub?
Silver Sands Motel and White Sands Motel right next to each other?
No St Helenas Church?
The Big Banana?
No Laconia By-Pass?
No Tilton Outlets?
Saunders Bay Motel and Cottages?
The Kings Grant Inn and the cruise boat that went out twice a day from its' dock on Dockham Shore Road?
The Saturday Night Dances at the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club?
The Mart?
Fireworks every Sunday Night at the Weirs?
Hickory Stick Farm?
Wendys on Paugus Bay (where you could get to by boat?)
I could go on and on - thanks for letting me take a storll down memory lane

The more I hear, the better it gets! Thanks, again, Chickie! Now I can admit I, too, licked my fingers when using that slippery, icky pale white glue!! Some time I wish you would post a picture of some of those bygone treasures...I am in awe that you actually still have them.
mrportjeff: I remember when Dan's Star Market was pretty much the "go to" supermarket( I shopped there for years, even after it became Jackson's Star Market)...but I most of all missed The Big Banana when it left...and why did it?? It was always mobbed.
Flboater...I am right there..turned 71 this summer ( I can't imagine how this has happened!!). I would say that I still golf, but that would be a stretch, considering how I bash the ball around...but...to everyone...isn't it great we are all on the correct side of the ground and having this much fun! A great thread, esp. considering all the "downer" news we contend with!

When my grandparents were my present age, they were OLD. Hard to believe. We were the last family on the block to get T.V. There was Milton Berle on Tuesday nights along with "professional" wrestling as well as Howdy Doody and I Love Lucy. My favorite was "Winky Dink." The deal was you sent in for a sheet of clear plastic to put over the T.V. screen so you could draw directly on the TV along with Winky Dink.
This year, the big excitement was that I am now on Medicare.:):)Now if I can only figure out Part D.

I had that!!!! I think it lasted about a week before my evil older brother used regular crayons on the plastic which wouldn't come off. I'd forgotten the name...thanks for the reminder.

Some people are discussing the Gilford/Laconia town line area on Rt 3. The Big Banana I remember, but what was the ice cream store to the left of the building? I remember McIntyre Circle as it was called back then in the late 60's early70's( and I think into the early 80's?) I remember if you wanted soft serve icecream, it was DQ on the Ave, but if you wanted hard ice cream with more flavors in the sugar cone you had to go to McIntyre Circle. Also, if you kept on the road headed toward home, Meredith, there was a KFC almost across the street from the Margate. AND if Dad didn't stop for ice cream at DQ or the circle, we would cross our fingers and hope for the Tamarack with all of their flavors. Sometimes we would get our icecream there and Mom would shop in BasketWorld while we sat in the car savoring every lick. To be so young and innocent again. Thanks to whoever started this thread!:):):)

I have a few 1980s memories as well
1. Staying at Bmae's then going to the buffett in the AM
2. going to Frankensundae at nite for my ice cream fix
3. going to Sawyers the original for 830m Fries lol
4. I used to never like the train rides back until 2001 cause it took too long
5. spending the day with my dad as my Mom and Grandparents antiqued shopping
6. going to dinner with Dad while my Mom and Grandparents went to William Tell Inn
7. spending the day at Funspot ( i still go there but for not as long as I used to)
8. I also remembered when we used to get off at exit 20 and when we saw the Bmae's and Funspot billboards my grandmother would turn around in the car in front of me and my Dad and wave that we made it

Penny,Penny - The restaurant next to the Big Banana was called the Red Barn in more recent years, but had been Foster's Restaurant when first built in the late 1940's. They had a good variety of ice cream flavors and a take-out window. For a short time there was a soft serve place on the other side of the Big Banana, as well. It looked like a small chalet and was better than DQ in my estimation. They had more than just the usual two flavors and their orange-pineapple was to die for. The first soft serve I ever had was called frozen pudding. Remember?

Sure do remember the Road Kill Restaurant. I thought it was around for a few seasons. Somewhere in my "well organized" :( file system is an old menu from the place. Item names on the menu that Granny Clampett would probably cook for the Beverly Hillbillies crew.

Staying at the "Holiday Bungalows" on Paugus Bay every summer.
Bowling on the Weirs strip.
Waiting in lines that took forever at The Kellerhaus.
Dinners with the family at The Windmill. (I think it is a furniture store now???)
And, hitting golf balls at a driving range that is on the left hand side of the street, heading toward the Weirs, a short while after Funspot. The remains are still there. The old lights, and the land was never used for anything. It still looks very much like a driving range that was simply abandoned. I give it a look every time I drive by, and think back 30 years, of my dad sitting there, watch me hit golf balls.

Great photo mcdude. Thanks for posting it. Did you know that before Foster’s Restaurant was built, there was a Howard Johnson’s at that location? It was moved to the Weirs in the mid to late ‘40s and burned to the ground a number of years later. Prior to Howard Johnson’s, there had been another restaurant there called “Dutch Land”, which was probably the first restaurant in this area to offer curb service. The waitresses were dressed in Dutch costumes and took and delivered orders right to the cars. I remember my mother speaking of it, as it was quite a novelty. I believe it was operating there in the late 1930’s to early ‘40s, when Howard Johnson purchased and renovated it.

I keep thinking "be quiet, you're done, now"...and then another memory looms! Chickie, help me out with this one, I know you'll recall this, because you remember everything...and save all that old, precious stuff. How good is that!! In the 60's there was a HUGE statue of (??) Paul Bunyon (??)on Union Ave., pretty near Cantin's. We lived in CT at the time, and our little girls would wait anxiously to spot that statue, knowing they were almost at their grandparents, for a weekend visit, AKA "Anything your little hearts desire will be yours"! Also, during the visit they'd look for the huge chimpanzee, with the banana, atop The Big Banana. Did that sign last the whole time BB was in business??
BTW, I ate at the Howard Johnson's in the Weirs, quite a few times....ah, the "28 flavors"!

WinnDixie,
The Paul Bunyan statue was in the parking lot of the Time Out Pub on the corner of Bridge Street. It was later the Backwater Grille (or something like that). It burned a few years ago and was finally torn down after several years of being boarded up following the fire. It never reopened. The Chimp sign at the Big Banana was repainted several times and remained to the end.
I will definitely hold on to my Tom Mix memorabilia, as I fully intend to enter the pearly gates wearing my whistling ring and glow-in-the-dark spurs, with the Indian arrowhead hanging from my neck. The built-in compass should prove most useful for the journey.
Re HoJo’s: After it was moved to the Weirs, the lot remained vacant until Foster’s Restaurant was built. Around 1946-47 a circus came to town by rail and was unloaded in Lakeport. The animals were walked from the station to McIntyre Circle where the tents were erected. Every kid around turned out to watch. Needless to say, it was a very big deal and so exciting. Seeing the huge elephants coming down Union Avenue was quite a sight to behold. What a day! What a day! Anyone remember that?

Wasn't the Captain's table formerly The Windmill Restaraunt? The Windmill was there for years and years, years and more years ago, LOL
I remember "The Mart" being built. It also comes to mind someone lost their life putting up the water tower. I remember hearing it on WLNH AM, FM wasn't around then.

The Captain’s Table and the Windmill were two different restaurants. The Captain’s Table occupied the present Lakes Region Veterinarian Hospital building, while the Windmill Restaurant was at the bottom of White Oaks Road. The building is still there but I don’t know what it is now. It was an antique shop and a paint store for a while after the Windmill ceased to be.
The Captain’s Table was first known as Chickland, a restaurant built about 1958 by Edward Spadafora. He later changed the name to the Captain’s Table and it operated under that name until around 1981. After that time it had two or three different owners and all specialized in seafood. They had seafaring names but I can’t recall what they were. I believe one of them had “Anchor” in the name. Wonder if anyone remembers these restaurants? It operated as a Wendy’s in the early to mid 1990’s, prior to Wendy's relocation to Lakeshore Road.
I remember the White Owl Cabins and next to them were the Bluebird Cabins, then the Douglas House on the same side of the street. On the lake side of the street (next to the cemetery) were the Sunset Cabins, Happy Landing Cabins and Douglas House owned a piece of property on that side, as well. Then there was the Swedish Village with its distinctive red cabins dotting the landscape. All gone but not forgotten.

Hi Chickie! These questions about the OLD days do bring us out don't they?? I remember eating at The Captain's Table, and I think, also, one of the later seafood ones. Like you, can't remember the name (does that say something about us or the place???). It seemed to me The Captain's table was always pretty busy... so,just like my question relative to The Big Banana, I wonder why it went away? That was "Burger Alley" then, and having a decent seafood place there was great. Even now, it seems surprising that this pretty water location hosts a Veterinarian (no offense to the Vet) and not a nice eating place! Not enough parking?
I do have a question about "The Mart". I do (barely) remember it. Was it in the location that The Globe eventually moved to, from the bottom of White Oaks Rd.? Isn't that now where the movie theater is? I liked the old original Globe store, and you couldn't beat their bargains. IMO it never was the same after it moved...oh well...goodbye "past"!!

The owners of the Shore Diner purchased the Captain's Table around 1970 and operated it until 1981. The old Shore Diner was torn down in 1973 to make way for Burger King. After they sold the Captain’s Table in ’81, they operated the Paugus Diner just up the road. I don’t know why those seafood restaurants went out of business. They all started off with a bang but patronage eventually dwindled. I guess it was the sign of the times - people were riding the wave of the new fast food places.
I remember the opening of MacDonald’s in Laconia was a big event. About a year prior to their arrival on the scene, an enterprising man started his own mini business based on the McDonald model. It was called Mr. Beef and was located on Union Avenue near the Messer Street junction – sold burgers and shakes only. He was doing a tremendous business and raking in the bucks when rumor spread that McDonald’s was coming to town. When McDonald’s opened its doors, his business took a nosedive and he erected a sign out front which read, “Old McDonald had a farm and I wish he had stayed there.”
Yes, the Globe was first located at the foot of White Oaks Road and was actually an expansion of the old Keller’s Ice Cream building. It was there for several years before moving to the location across from the airport. I am not certain about this, but think the “Mart” was built while Globe was still at the first location. They ran concurrently for a few years and when the Mart closed, the Globe moved there, as it was a larger building. Everyone loved the old Globe. If you couldn’t find an item anywhere, you could find it at Globe and at quite a bargain price.
Those were the days!

Wow, I guess the McDonald's opening WAS a big event!! I think some of the readers might get a kick out of this, but you can back me up, Chickie. They had the police out on Union Ave. directing traffic, which was backed up in both directions, big-time! You just inched along, and the parking lot couldn't begin to hold everyone. I had to drive by to get home, and my two girls wanted to stop in the worst way...but we had to wait a few days until things quited down. For McDonald's!! Over the years "it growed"--like Topsy--with at least two additions--at different times-- out to the right, as you faced the front. Have had many a cup of coffee with friends there at McDonald's, and--eventually--watched grandsons bouncing around in the tub of balls. Where has the time gone!

10-21-2008, 10:00 AM
Yes, the opening of McDonald's brought an onslaught of people who had been anxiously awaiting their first taste of those cholesterol filled burgers we all grew to love. The menu was quite limited – hamburgers, cheeseburgers and fries, as I recall. I don’t believe the fish sandwich had been introduced at that stage - definitely no Big Macs and no drive-thru window. They had six to eight ordering stations and there were long lines at all of them during the lunch and dinner hours for weeks to come. It was a busy place. Burger King never cause such a stir when they opened a couple years later and the subsequent fast food establishments were generally greeted with a “ho-hum”. The age of fast food had come to Laconia and Union Avenue was soon to be transformed into Fast Food Lane.

I am on the leading edge of the baby boomer generation 31-Dec-1946.
I am old enough to remember the Shore Dinner and the ice cream parlor across from the old Swedish Village next to the golf driving range.
The big thing for me as a child was to reach the age where I could skipper our boat. It was a wooden row boat with a 5 HP Evinrude on the back.
I have been coming to the lake since 1957 and at one point in the 70's purchased a home on Long Island for a outlandish price of 44,000 including 300 feet of waterfront with dock and swim platform. Marriage, 2 Children and job assignments around the world forced us to sell it. If we kept that and put zero into our 401K over the years, we would be well off today since the house sat on two lots.

As teenagers, we use to go to the Weirs Saturday night (usually by boat),
to a place called 'Teen Haven'. The place use to hold teen dances, and they had live bands! We use to dance till midnight. Met many girls there both local and those vacationing like myself.
It was a safe place for kids to meet and have fun, no alcohol or drugs.

Can't remember all the details of that initial stay at the lake; but I do remember my Dad driving around the lakes region in our trusty 1949 Ford 4-dr sedan looking for a place to stay. By chance, we found a vacancy in Wolfeboro. It's been a love relationship ever since; although we now tend to gravitate toward Moultonborough/Center Harbor/Meredith.
After Mom died in 2001 (Dad in 1987). My sister and I cruised out just beyond Wolfeboro Bay in the boat and threw two red roses into the water as a "Thank You Mom & Dad" for bringing us to this wonderful paradise.

Teen Haven is also mentioned...Man! Do I have memories of that place as well as Irwin Gardens.
Could we add another category...Over 80? Or two...Over 100? Then I won't have to be in the last category.
Christmas Island Steak House, maybe ?

The cars I see in these old photos. I have to remind myself these are not photos of old cars but old photos of new cars.
Also mentioned a few times is the thread. The Paugus Bay water front is just beyond the building on the other side off this street view. As mentioned "Those were the days!"

Maybe the "Car" buff's can identify the years and models of the cars in photo.
"Car buff" here. :coolsm:
The newest car is the green 1958 Pontiac (left). The other green car is a 1956 Dodge (right).
The white convertible is a 1956 Studebaker Sky Hawk. It had a Studebaker "look" to it, but had to look it up. :o The same model as a coupe sold recently at auction for $37,000, and went to Britain. :eek2:

Well, I was a kid when my dad had to paint the top half of the car headlights black, and we had those red and blue ration discs. We used to watch the blimps float out of South Weymouth, MA. Search lights were part of our defense. Take a guess!

Back to the lakes region. And also mentioned in this thread.
From post #122
The Captain’s Table was first known as Chickland, a restaurant built about 1958 by Edward Spadafora.
This area of the lake has changed so much "Chickland" actually came in two different flavors. I'm pretty sure the green flavor was first, just an assumption. based on the amount of trees in the back ground. I think that the pinkish red version was latter. Paugus bay is in the background. In the second image you can just make out "Little Island" in the background. Now-a-days can you actually have a restaurant called "Chickland" ? :):)
Maybe one of the historians here would know if in the pinkish red version photo what that little green building is outside. Was that the landing for the "FOXY BOAT" service. (See link below) I'd love to know if it was their lake port departure and arrival location. So much has change in this location over the years it's hard to remember where everything was back then.

Awesome photos thank you. So much history and so much changed. I really wish I had discovered the lake earlier in life. I was almost 40 my first visit. [emoji22]. But as they say better late than never. [emoji4]

Obviously it was 1966 when everyone on the coast line of Massachusetts was in a panic about the invasion. :liplick:

Very likely Barney Bear is correct with WWII ration tokens.
I'm now 66 (changed categories since I answered the poll) and have been at the lake since 1959. Had to laugh when I saw this movie mentioned. My grandparents took us to see it at the Colonial Theater in Laconia. We stay at Sandy Point. My grandfather left the lights on in his 1959 Chevy, and naturally when we got out of the movie the battery was dead. By the time we got out of the show and found the car wouldn't start, the sidewalks had been rolled up and no one was around. My grandmother and younger brother stayed with the car, and Pop and my brother and I started walking. We were on Union Ave. and a policeman stopped and wound up taking us to Cantin Chevrolet where a tow truck was on night duty. He took us back and got the car going again and we drove back to Sandy Point hoping that the car would be fully charged by the time we arrived. Still watch the movie whenever I see it's on. "Emergency, everyone to get from street!"

Hello,
I wanted to vote in your poll. I got a message: "This is an old threat. It was started 5019 days ago, there may be recent replies...."
