OK here is my question;

We have a traditional cottage that draws water from the lake via a pipe now. We are debating adding a winterized small garage home behind it and update the septic and all. The lot is pie shaped so away from the lake it gets narrow and steep. I think there is 75' rule for septic to well.

I was thinking there should be a way to warm up lake pipe so that it does not freeze and we could use it as well.

Any thoughts?

There is a thread called "Using Lake Water year round" in this same forum a few weeks ago. Very thorough discussion.

The overall subject of year-round water from the lake has generated several threads with a lot of really good info out on the fourm - using a deep well pump, filtration systems, quick disconnects, and heated water line.

For the heated water line I used a Canadian product (assuming they know cold protection haha)... you can check it out here: http://www.heatline.com/pdfs/carapace_brochure.pdf

Been in use now for 3 years without any issues, and there is a thermostat coupling that you can embed along the line at what should be the coldest point (like where ours goes above ground into the water).

Give me a shout if you'd like more info on the other pieces/parts of the system, happy to help -PIG

Gilford Well, which is located in Gilford close to Wal-Mart, has these winter waterline heated supply lines in their building, and you can go look at them and ask them all about it for a do-it-yourself installation.

One nice feature is that digging the trench is not so diificult because it is recommended to dig a very small and shallow trench ..... like just two inches below the ground surface, and about three inches wide .....no need to dig down below the frost line ....just a small, shallow trench.

The line I installed back in November 1992, a 125' x 1 1/4" black poly tube that cost $1050 has worked perfectly ever since with no issues....hut-hut-hut!
