Antique Appraisal
My brother in law was a collector. He left me 6 items that look like bayonets but some are more like swords. Look like civil war items. Also left me a walrus tusk and whale teeth scrimshaw carvings…..I’m sure they are reproductions but wondering if anyone knows a person who could look them over and tell me what they are. Not looking to sell, just want some info

I remember watching Antiques Roadshow several years ago. A gentleman had 2 or 3 whales teeth scrimshaw items. I think the estimate was like 35k. Good luck!

Just a thought...
If you don't receive a local recommendation, you might try Mystic Seaport. Their Collections & Research Center might be able to help you or refer you to someone. |

Check the internet. Sometimes you can send an appraiser pictures and they are enough to have them make a fake/may be real decision. I’ve also search for pictures of antique swords to compare what I had. Turned out to be a training sword from WW1 that someone had sharpened to destroy what little value it had.

You just missed “The Antique Scrimshaw Collectors Association” 2024 “Scrimshaw & Nautical Antiques Weekend” in New Bedford. It was this past weekend.
