Laconia Makes National TV....
So we were watching the Primary coverage on Fox last night when Karl Rove comes on with his little whiteboard saying, "However the lakeside town of Laconia goes, so goes NH. Here are the results of Laconia's 6 Wards so far....."
Amazingly, it was pretty spot on to the statewide result! He went on to say that since the 2000 election, Laconia results have been a reliable predictor for the state results. I guess Laconia is no longer famous for just vacant lots in The Weirs anymore! |

Jeez...Lighten Up....Satirical Humor.....
Satire: "The use of humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule, in which follies, shortcomings or vices are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself, into improvement."

Thanks for the definition

There are plenty of threads on this forum with references to Laconia's problems. Why not comment in one of them and let the news piece stand on its own? |

Glad you liked my definition of Satire...
....perhaps it was not your intent, but your most recent comments about my definition of "satire" seemed a bit condescending and patronizing. I apologize in advance if I am inferring something incorrectly.
I think it's great that Laconia was mentioned on national TV in a positive fashion...I truly do. I also think that The Weirs--while it has great potential--is one of the city's weak spots. I do not see a problem in praising Laconia for something positive, (being on national tv), and teasing Laconia for one of its weaknesses, (The Weirs), in the same post. The Weirs comment in my post was intended to be humorous, while at the same time keeping some focus on this weakness. I do not see this as any different than when we praise a family member for something s/he did well, but then tease him/her for one of their shortcomings, (e.g.: Great job on your report card, son....now about that pigpen you call a room...) At times like these, we all need to reflect on the famous words of Sgt. Hulka from the movie "Stripes", who said, "Lighten Up, Francis...!" |

And now back to your previously interrupted thread.....
So after all the exposure, does anyone know which candidate actually WON Laconia? They said Laconia has been an accurate picker in the last few Presidential elections.

What I got out of all the news during the entire process is that the towns in northern New Hampshire especially places like Laconia are stuck in a poverty cycle , have under educated people and a HUGE heroin problem. The towns on the Mass border have educated people , make over the national average income and don't have the drug issue.
The bottom line is it didn't paint the areas north of Manchester as anywhere someone would want to move to , vacation , or open a business . Don't shoot the messenger but the Laconia region sounded like the next Detroit |

Wow! That is impressively mean and obnoxious! You sound like an old *** republican, don't shoot the messenger, I'm only telling you for your own good. Most people I have met in NH are pretty decent folks. Obviously I haven't met you, or I don't suppose I'd think much of the locals.

I have no data to support a claim that it's worse in Laconia than anywhere else.. But when I drive to work through Laconia and see people nodding off while standing up and walking like a zombie, I don't like it. Heroins a problem in a lot of places these days. I just see it more in Laconia since I'm local to the area.
