Back during the very late 50's into the early 60's, my friend Skip's dad would take the two of us water skiing late evening or early morning. We would go from Varney Point just north of what is now Gilford beach. We would ski between the point and Locke 's Is, down and around Rattlesnake and back. Generally fairly smooth water and a great run. Sometimes even down into Alton Bay and then back. If we did it without falling, we got to get ice cream at Dorothy 's restaurant in Glendale before going to the trailers across the street, Two Pines Trailer Park, our summer home. Oh, the memories. Boats were first a Chris Craft runabout, and later Century Raven twin screw.

Default 60's Waterskiers

I remember in the 60's waterskiers in the early mornings (before 7) going up and down Alton Bay from Sandy Point north. Some were going barefoot.

Warner Nickerson won. This event is well-worth getting up early to watch.

Recently back from Europe, Warner dug his ski out of storage and had only 2 short practice runs a day or two before the race. His dad noted that a fast boat helped. I think fast boat or not; skiing that distance was a feat.
We did got to watch the start promptly at 7 am.

Agreed. I've fallen that fast on a steep snow covered slope and came out fine.(no trees). I've also fallen barefooting on water at 40 and got pummeled.
