Probably ice-in around mid January.
Yes the lake has had years where it did not completely freeze. I've boated on the lake every single month except February. The January trip was a few years ago and it was interesting as I was in my 13 Whaler and we would be hitting little skim coats of ice as we were motoring along. It was so cool to see ice crystals flying. The March trip was in 2002 and I was with another forum member who was showing me his Island home that he was selling. We went from Minge Cove to Rattlesnake in his pontoon boat. Ice-Out April 27, 2011. I use that guess every year... and I'm always wrong. |

I do remember many years ago ice fishing the first weekend in January in front of Lake Shore Park. Ice in had to be sometime in December that year.

Well, first someone would need to come up with a definition of Ice-In.
When The Mount can't travel to all it's ports without hitting ice? Or when you can travel to all the ports on a snowmobile, safely, without hitting open water? |

January 15th is my guess. Has there been a time the Lake hasn't frozen over?

End of ice-out season?
How about a contest for first car on the ice? As others point out, some years the lake does not freeze over - and some spots never ever freeze. A picture of a car - at least 150 feet from shore - would show that the season of ice-out has passed.

... or first vehicle through the ice? There seems to be at least one per year.
I recall a few years back the Meredith fishing derby had to be postponed in February because of lack of ice.
