When When When
Crazy New England weather. Any guesses as to when we can get the boats into the water?

I would say when the ice is out or when it is safe to put the boats in.

I've seen boats on the Alton, Wolfeboro, and Weirs cams for over a week! Guess it depends on what you mean by a boat!

This wind and rain must be beating the ice up quite a bit.
I was pretty close to popping "Destination Winnipesaukee" in the DVD player last night. Gettin antsy. |

Lots of Water
The wind and rain did a real job on the ice yesterday along the West Alton shoreline where we are located. We now see open water from Minge Cove to Smalls Cove, over to Sleepers and Rattlesnake Islands and from Rum Point over to Ship and Moose Islands. We're getting snow this morning so visibility is a bit limited, but it looks like the open water may extend down to between Sleepers Island and Smith Point as well. (Maybe kayakn can provide some additional information on the Smith Point area.) There are still areas of broken ice "debris" floating around in places, but it's mostly open water we are seeing this morning.
The southeast wind yesterday was brutal, with many gusts of 35 - 45 mph. It howled all day and pushed a lot of ice into our shoreline, damaging a number of docks. The wind broke up the ice during the morning hours, and then the waves in the open water (which grew very large as the day went on and the areas of open water expanded) had chewed up much of the icy "slush" by sundown.

DRH call McDude as he has one and loves to Kayak. I believe he is up this week too. Bummer, I can't get up to see the changes.

Oooooppppssss, sorry I did not see this thread until just now. Open water extends down past Ames Farm. Much of the broads open with ice bergs of various sizes floating around. In Glidden Cove: Area of that crunchy ice from Chicken Island over to south east side of cove. Someone with a pontoon boat has cleared a path through it to the Rattlesnake Landing...And the weather is great...come on up!
