Sounds like a Blast!
Wish I didn't have to be at work on the other side of the lake that day, because that event sounds like a real blast! If any of you go, please post here afterwards and let us know if it's as much fun as it sounds like! Thanks for the link, McDude!

Rain, Shine, or Snow!
A couple of years ago we went to watch the Smith River Canoe Race, and it started to snow! The contestants were undeterred, although some of them looked very cold. But, it is a fun event.

vantage point
I want to go and take some photos of this "prestigious" event and check it out. Sounds like parking is a hassle at the town beach. I'm thinking of parking at the Wright Museum and watch the canoes and kayaks come through there....but I'm also thinking of being out on the old RR tracks (now a bike path?) to take some shots as they enter Crescent Lake from the river. How can I access the RR tracks? or more specifically is there a place to park? click here for map of area

Walk the Path
Park in town parking behind DeVlyders or at the falls and walk the railroad path. Good viewing along the path.

I had a blast at the Smith River Race. I would guestimate 200 boats participating and everyone looked like they were having fun. Luckily it stopped raining and was only drizzling lightly. This was the 30th annual running of the canoes and kayaks on the Smith River. Check out photopost for more shots.

So happy that you went and had a great time, and really glad you've shared the experience with us! I'm envious that you were able to go, and perhaps next year I'll be able to be a spectator. It certainly sounds like a really fun time.

Governor Benson in Canoe Race!
I didn't even realize it when I took the photo (in above post) but apparently that is Governor Benson in the red canoe! (someone pointed this out to me) Here's the article from the Grunter that speaks of him participating and a list of the winners. Do you think he stopped in at Governor Romney's place for a cocktail on his way home?
