Default Where to Get Birthday Cake?

I am looking for a bakery that can make the most delicious coconut cake in the lakes region. (coconut icing with vanilla cake) I will be staying in Campton so it would be nice to find a bakery on the western side of the lake.

Default Commercial Cakes

If you are planning on going to a supermarket, I would suggest going to Shaws if you like sweet frosting. The cakes at Hannafords have the whipped frosting which is light and does not taste like sugar.

The most OUTSTANDING bakery in the area and it is not in the Campton area is Riverstone in Conway. It's the closest I've seen to a NYC pastry shop. We always make the trip for a special occasion. Jen raves about one in Tilton.

Barbara, it pains me to have to tell you this, but....Riverstones closed earlier this year and is not expected to reopen. We absolutely loved that place, and we'll be in mourning for a very long time.

Speaking of cakes, I'll always be grateful to Love Bites Pastry Shop for donating this unique cake to ForumFest V in 2008. Unfortunately they are closed for good.

Here's Darcy presenting the cake to me:

For a beautiful custom cake, check out 'The Sweet Life' in Gilford. It's a local woman baking out of her home but her creations are gorgeous (and delicious)! Check out her Facebook page for photos. Search for "'The Sweet Life' cakes and confections". You can email her at thesweetlife1@yahoo.com. She did my daughter's birthday cake this year and we got tons of compliments. I almost took credit for it but...

Thanks everybody for these great recommendations and the PMs.
I am all set with the cake. I will definitely look into some of the specialty folks for future occasions.

Oh NOOOOOOO!!!!!! There is nothing up here that can come anywhere near Riverstone. What a disappointment this is.

If you don't mind me asking you, where did you end up getting your cake from and what did you get?

Default Wonderful Cakes!

For cakes, you will not miss if you contact Jennifer Clifford in Moultonborough. She has come through several times for me and they are tasty and beautiful at the same time. She can make custom to your desires. We have had a few for large and small gatherings and all have been impressed!

Default Greasy frosting?

It seems to me that every cake from a commercial bakery I've ever tasted had frosting that resembles sweetened grease. I get the impression that the composition of their frostings favors artistic appearance over palatability. I much prefer a simple frosting, easily made with confectioner sugar, a little butter or margarine, and whatever little milk is needed for spreadability without being drippy. How do the cake providers already listed in this thread fare with respect to their frostings?

Thumbs up Riverstones lives!!!!

I just spotted this blurb in the Fryeburg Town Column of today's Conway Sun. Then I googled "Riverstones Bakeshop Fryeburg" and discovered they've set up a new page on Facebook. It looks like it's the same baker that was in the old Conway location. Technically they're not in the Lakes Region, but a lot of locals were despondent when they closed the Conway shop, myself included. This is bad news for my diet, but otherwise....best news of the day!!!

"Fryeburg's newest business, Riverstones Bakeshop and Pleasant Street Arts, will open their doors on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 12 to 6 p.m. Located at 21 Pleasant Street, Ceci and Wolf will offer a delectable variety of cakes, roulades, éclairs (my downfall), cheesecake, tarts, croustades, and the list just goes on and on. The shop will be open weekly from Thursday through Sunday and will also offer an art class for kids' ages 6 to 9 years old. The first class will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Stop by this week, wish them well, and satisfy your sweet tooth. For more information call (207) 653-5341"

Default Village Bakery

My daughter bakes great cupcakes. Google 'Yupcakes' out of Burlington. She will ship.

I had the Village Bakery in Laconia bake a cake for me. It was excellent! I highly recomend the Village Bakery.
