A New Adventure Begins-Movin' Up

Okay forum friends ...so starts a new adventure for me in my quest to relocate to the lakes region. I've decided to target Wolfeboro as my living destination for a variety of reasons. Now come the questions:

• I have a Sunfish sailboat on a trailer-best place to sail it?
• I want to get involved in back stage theatre-suggestions?
• I produce professional video and compose my own music on the side-ideas for what I could do in the area?
• I am a former environmental educator and love the outdoors and learning about nature--suggestion for how and where to get involved?
• I paint landscapes with water colors and want to get better at it-classes, artists?
• I am looking to sail on bigger boats on the lake and looking for owners who may want an extra hand on their crew. Where should I go to hang out and find other sailors?
• I've always wanted to build stick furniture-any resources, tradespeople?
• I'm very interested in sustainable energy, gardening my own food, learning how to be more self-sufficient-any resources, organizations?
• I love listening to live music, jazz especially-any venues?
• Is there a Universalist church around?
• What spectator sports are around, festivals, general fun crowd gathering type events?
• Dog and fish supplies?
• Dog groomer?
• Best vet?
• Natural food store?
• Is there a food coop?

I am aware of the LRNC and plan to attend their activities and see if there are groups withing that organization that would be fun to join.


ALSO- I have recently changed my visiting plans and will be at the Naz for the entire week of May 31- June 6th. So if any of you forum members want to meet and greet that week, send me a PM. (Interested in finding the best lobster rolls, ice cream, and possibly get out on the lake)

Drive over to Heath's Grocery in Center Harbor. And ask for Frank W. Or telephone Heath's Grocery and ask for Frank W. - the actor. He is weekend manager (I think) at the grocery store.

Frank has been involved in everything related to theatre up here. And beyond.

Look up the movie Amistad. Frank was the Crier or Town Crier. He should have been nominated for an Academy Award - but those Hollywood people just ignored Franks famous performance."

Seriously, The Winni Playhouse has a multitude of opportunities for backstage volunteers. Training is provided when needed. Please join our email list by visiting www.winniplayhouse.org. We regularly host free tech theatre workshops. We have a great, friendly crew of volunteers, including a couple who drive more than an hour sometimes 5 or 6 days a week (their choice!) because they love being involved so much.

You can walk to the current theatre in the Weirs from the Naz if you want so please drop in and say hello when you're in town! I'd also be happy to give you a tour of our future home in Meredith where we currently build and paint all our sets. In fact, we are hosting the Lakes Region Chamber Business After Hours on the Meredith Campus from 5-7pm on June 1st. It's open to the public so please feel free to come. If you want to find me I'll be one of the people in a silly costume.

To answer a few other questions...

For live music check out The Flying Monkey in Plymouth.

There is a Unitarian Church in Laconia which is very active, not to mention supportive of lots of area non-profits, ours included.

I am a relatively new pet owner but have found Laconia Pet Center very useful and have been very happy with Inter-Lakes Animal Hospital in Meredith so far.

There is more year 'round culture in the northern part of the lake. Wolfeboro folk has relocated to the Flying Monkey in Plymouth. The Silver Arts Center has great shows and is also in Plymouth at PSU. The UU in Tamworth is top Notch and the Winni Playhouse is terrific. I love Wolfeboro as a day trip but not if it's going to be year 'round. Moultonboro has access to all of this plus low taxes.

Right in Wolfeboro is the Village Players who do 4-5 productions a year.

On the water? Seriously, pretty much any body of water in the area will work. I've had one on Merrymeeting for over 30 years. The sailing is fun but it can be frustrating. With the many peaks, ridges, and valleys around the lake, the wind can be very unpredictable and shifty.

Wolfeboro Bay would be a great spot, if you can get out during the week or early/late in the season. Brewster Academy does their sailing there. But I don't think it would be much fun on seasonal weekends given the boat traffic coming into and out of the town docks.

I would expect that the sailing would be good on Lake Wentworth too.

Just be sure to inspect your boat and trailer each time to insure you aren't carrying milfoil. On that thought, perhaps volunteer to be a Lake Host on occasion? It would be a great way to meet the other boaters in the area. http://www.nhlakes.org/lake-host-program.htm

There is a thriving music community in Wolfeboro. The Great Waters folks, the music series held at Brewster, ... I won't repost the links. They can be found via the town site or Chamber of Commerce site above.

There is a artists show in Cate Park each July. Perhaps start with contacts there?

The NH Boat Museum opens this weekend. I know many active Winni boaters, both sail and power, are members there. I would guess it would be a good place to make contacts.

See above concerning Great Waters concert series and Brewster. Not so much jazz, but a start.

Well we have a group that plays a softball game every 4th of July at The Nick

The 4th of July Parade is a great Wolfeboro tradition. First Night on New Years. Weekly concerts at the bandstand in...Cate Park! (highly recommended). Huggins Hospital Fair... You won't be bored if you don't want to be.

My wife could better answer these as she is the primary caregiver for the dogs. There is a new pet supply store downtown, next to the Downtown Grill.

On the eastern side of the Lakes Region is the Barnstormers Theater. Check out their website. They are the oldest summer theater in the US (since 1931). The theater was updated and is now a year-round facility. They do 8 weekly shows during the summer + other activities off-season.

IMO - Small boating in Winnipissaukee is best acomplished before the crowds start to build, by 10-11AM-ish, and between 4-7PM-ish.

With your list of skills and interests I imagine you will have no problem keeping busy.
