flyguy - Will you print this and make it available to purchase. Would you consider taking the same shot during the Spring Summer with the beautiful blue water

Not Long Pond. It's a small pond on Rt. 111 that some folks do stand up jet ski slalom courses on in the summer. I don't even know what the name is. Just south of the Gulf gas station. Also, Cobbetts pond seemed all but free of ice yesterday

Default Not quite yet

Still a foot of ice in Winter Harbor. Enjoyed a beautiful day on the ice fishing yesterday. Also took the sled for a several rips around the Harbor and a trip to Rattlesnake and back. Several sleds seen enjoying the day in the Harbor and out in the Broads. I think the fat lady has begun her song as the ice is starting to get punky. That was the last ride of the season for me. Caught a nice 'bow and laker also. Looking forward to trolling now. Happy Easter all.

I was on the ice a good part of yesterday with friends who were fishing. They reported a solid 12" in most areas, and they were riding sleds all over. There was a lot of slush on top but it was solid underneath. No real signs of seepage or weakening.

I took a walk on it this afternoon too. If anything, it's more solid than yesterday. The mushy slush that was on top yesterday solidified over night and didn't weaken much today.

The pace of melting seems to have accelerated in the past 24 hours. I'm sure the rain last night helped.

On a walk this morning I noticed many new areas of open ground, and the snowbanks along our road were noticeably smaller than yesterday. The ground seemed firmer, indicating that the frost is leaving in many areas, and the local streams are running full force.

The ice pack hasn't visually changed much. But I sense that the corner has turned, the next few nights temps notwithstanding. While there's some time to go, we should start to see noticeable change in the ice over the next few days.

Default Lilly Pond

I seem to remember that someone said Lilly Pond was some sort of 2 week warning. It looks very slushy and has water pretty much all around it's shoreline.

the pictures from around the lake show most areas are very dark gray and ice in some locations is looking very thin at the edges. I like that open water now connects the shoals off Black Cat with its shoreline....a historical sign for me that things are "well in motion". If daytime temps stay in the 50s and night time doesn't drop below 30 for the next few weeks AND we get a few rainshowers (tonight) and some good wind....things could be looking good in as little as two weeks. Reasonably 3 weeks is more likely but I want to be an optimist and get my boat in....wouldn't be the first time I was out there dodging floating ice packs....or boating in the snow...

Default Warmer temps "a coming"

We have to endure one more chill tomorrow and then here come the 50s! I caught the news at noon and they were talking about high 60s for the coming weekend! We unwrap the Breeze over the weekend of the 13th and we'll be waxing like crazy whether ice is still in or not. It's still a labor of love and we are chomping at the bit to get going on it. Warm weather always puts me in a good mood. Does anyone know if the Gagnons from Silver Sands plan to turn the Saunders Bay Cam on any time soon. I love to watch the progression.

Think Spring

Channel 7 said today by this time next week it could be in the 70's they had Monday at 69 at noon time but just looked and is now down to 62 with some showers.

Here is what he wrote at the end of his blog

Quote:
Still on the hunt for the next 70 or 80 degree day. They can pop up in a moments notice on the 7-10 day weather maps, so stay tuned.

Driving back from Meredith today toward Alton we got several good looks at the lake. It's been very windy the past couple days and we could see that the ice is beginning to move a bit. It's pushed up onto the shoreline rocks along the northwestern tip of Rattlesnake Island, and along the northwestern side of Rattlesnake's "peninsula" (the part that extends toward Sleeper Island).

Seems hard to believe with the temps we've had for the past 48 hours, but once we get to tomorrow, I think we'll see things change quickly.

While the ice has been solidifying on the surface over the past 24 hours, the under ice temps have continued to warm. The pack is still weakening underneath. Some open areas have continued to expand, and cracks are appearing with all the winds.

Still a ways to go. But I sense that once things warm up, changes will be quick.

Even with the lower temps you can see changes happening within the last 24 hours. Open water shows up in today's frame (see middle and upper right).

Around Christmas Island the yards are clear. The only remaining snow is a couple of small patches and snow banks. The wind is ripping from west to east and rapidly opening the shoreline and coves. Into the 50's with sun the next two days, so it looks good for the clean-ups.
Looking forward to having a drink with you guys this spring!!!

If the lawn is in the sun it is snow free, if it is in the shade it has snow.

You can really see what has shaded areas in this shot

I heard on the news they were charging him with some sort of felony fraud or a gross misrepresentation of the truth. I think he would look good in a prison orange jumpsuit filling potholes along the interstates of the east coast

Default Water Temp

The water temp hit 39 today on the Forum Water temp page. Last year ice out was 10 days after that. I realize we need the weather to cooperate, but 3rd week of April could happen.

Since Bass Pro Shops opening up a new store in Hooksett, they will need some taxidermy for decorations... why not a not so famous groundhog?

Obviously a new model is needed the current one is defective.

Default Two Week Indicator

My two week indicator (Massabesic Lake) which has not failed me in four years straight, will be free of ice tomorrow or Saturday. If my indicator holds true, ice should be out by April 20th. I personally feel my indicator will be wrong this year as Winni just seems to want to hang on but I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Here's a web cam shot from Welch Island today showing the shoreline finally starting to give way...

Pic from my camera taken today. My circulators were turned on last week and have been eating like mad. They gained probably 30' extra today in front of the beach.

Willand Pond in Dover is usually ice free 2 weeks before Winni as well. What does the Lily Pond look like?

Default Lilly Pond

I drove by Lilly pond at lunch. There's a good size opening but still lots of ice.

Default Temp over dam hit 39 degrees today

Temp at lakeport hit 39 today usually the ice is gone within a week after that or less. Ice on the north end is getting that crystal look it gets right before it begins to break up. South side looks to be more solid. With the temps and wind next week looks like my guess of 4-13 is too late.

I have a similar indicator, Stevens Pond in Manchester. It is usually right around 3 weeks, but the last couple of years have been 2 weeks before ice out. I declared ice out on Stevens Pond on 4/2, and I predict ice out on Winni will be April 19.

Nah, 4/13 may be too early. I bet near the 18-20 or so for total ice out.

Default Picture request

Can you guys get out there and take some pictures of the ice-out progress, maybe this weekend. I really miss the visual progress reports -especially Alton Bay region.

Thanks in advance

Well, not Alton, but the water that goes into Alton.

You can follow Merrymeeting Lake ice-out progress here.

Just back from Wolfeboro. Things are starting to break now. Our 2 mile dirt road is much better today than it's been in weeks. It appears that the frost is out and it's finally draining.

Four days ago, Back Bay was completely frozen. Today it is totally clear.

Fishermen were out on Wolfeboro Bay. See other photos in Photopost.

Default Weather this weekend

Sunday and Monday should see some big action with the ice - 60's and windy. Hurry up ice I want to open the camp Thursday! Nothing better than opening the camp and watching the Masters. You know what they say about golf, it is like watching ice melt

Default Going Going Gone!!

Checking out the region's web cams for progress ..... Wow things are really going good for the early part of next week. Even the Bear Island cam shows open water over to Meredith Neck! I think definately by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week it'll be all gone. Lakeport Dam still reporting 39 degrees but with the warming of the sun over the weekend we could see a rise to 40 or 41 in a hurry. Bring it on!!!

I wish, but I think that may be a bit too optimistic. There was a foot on Winter Harbor a week go, with trucks on it. Last weekend there were plenty of sleds still on the lake.

The Mount doesn't go to Winter Harbor and that area is not exposed to open lake waves and wind from the Broads. The whole lake being completely free of ice might take until the end of April. I'm having a blast checking all the cams every half hour. It doesn't change from the last look but I can't help myself! A foot of ice can melt pretty fast when the sun is beating on it and the wind smashing it around. OOOOH I can't wait!!!

I check my cameras at the island every 20 minutes...I know the feeling!

Smith Cove still looks pretty locked in which is where we dock. How do things look from Glendale out towards Welch?

Default Paugus Bay looks ready to open up a bit...

Looking south toward Lakeport.

I've also noticed a few inches of water level increase over the last couple of days.

Default Here You Go Steveo!

Well I wouldn't have believed it but WOW when we got up here this afternoon and looked out over the lake I do not see two weeks left but I will let you all be the judge...

If I did this right, there should be 5 pics below. I apologize for the clarity but they were taken with my iphone.

The first pic was taken from the Glendale town docks.

The second pic was taken from Lincoln park looking at Welch. That is not water on top of the ice, that is open water cracks between the ice!!

The third pic is a closer view of the open water cracks.

The fourth pic was taken from my deck. That is Welch Island in the center right. You can see how dark the ice is and all the water cracks that have opened up.

The fifth pic was also taken from my deck and is a pic of the broads.

Hope this helps Steveo and all you itchy island dwellers! I can't wait either for ice out!!!

Dan

Default Getting there

The howling winds last night (Friday into Saturday) really changed things. We have open water shore to shore across the lake now. There is still an ice jam to the north and to the south - but the open area is about 1/3 by 1/3 mile. On Sunday, the winds are going to change to the south and it should start moving the ice around and break it up. I expect my dock will be in by next weekend.

I love it when I see canoeing on Winni. Ice out is really on the way. Also see ice receding on Wentworth. It would be great if Wolfeboro Bay cam was streaming live. Thanks Wolfeboro Bay Real Estate for providing the webcam. I watch every day.

I moved a hunk of ice in front of my house yesterday afternoon. I was very surprised to see the depth and solidness of the ice beyond. There is still a good 10-12" of very solid, clear ice below the surface. While the top looks fragile, it's still going to be awhile before this all goes away. At least another week.

The Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club cam is live streaming and has a view similar to the Bay cam...

Boy did the forecasters blow today's forecast. Hasn't gone above freezing yet at my house!

The shoreline has receded a good 25-30 feet, two weeks ago we were sitting out there in our chairs.
I would say by Monday afternoon the two open sections will be connected.

Default a little ice-out...

Yahooooo!!! made it out to the island today with a combination of ice-breaking and hugging the shoreline... although nice and sunny, there was a very chilly wind... but it felt GREAT to be out on the water

The ice that was there was still several inches thick, but hopefully with sunny warm days ahead, it will be finished in short order...

next stop... summer!!! -PIG

Here's today's pic from Welch. There is nice spot of open water that has formed at 9 o'clock in the pic. There is a lot of open water not seen in the pic on the broads side of Welch. It really opened up yesterday and overnight nicely!

Default Digiscoping

I was toying with my old 20-D camera today and decided to try "digiscoping". Basically I attached my camera to a Kowa Prominar 25X spotting scope and took a shot of the Welch Island shoreline on the broads side. This pic was taken from 1.7 miles away. It did not work nearly as good as I was hoping but here is the shot I took. You can see how the shoreline has really opened up!

Photo halfsphere taken from Locke's hill this morning. There's still a lot of ice out there, but it's so grey I don't know how it's holding on to the wind. Saw some snowflakes on the way home...

Was at leek today. Mirror lake in Tuftonboro has a ton of open water out in the middle. I bet that is iced out Thursday. Winni seems to be on track for a normal ice out between 4/15 and 4/19. I bet 10 or 11 days is a good bet to get around the lake in a boat.

Lilly Pond was about 99% ice free at about 5:30pm today. Just a small bit of ice on the northern shoreline. It will be gone tomorrow morning, if it's not gone already. I know that the old wive's tale says Winni will be ice out 2 weeks after Lilly Pond is ice free, but I'd be surprised if it takes that long.

Default Lily Pond 10 days

I thought the folklore was 10 days from Lily Pond ice-out. That would make ice-out on the big lake on the 18th. I amthinking it may be a tad sooner. This could be wishful thinking on my part!

No matter when, it will be soon!

Default It doesn't compare

to the camera shots from the ground, but this satellite shot from today shows a significant change from late last week. The ice on the main part of the lake seems to be all but gone (at least from space, it is a very dark weak gray). You can even see open areas around Rattlesnake and the opening of Alton Bay. A few lighter areas in the northern extremes and Wolfeboro.

We're close!!!!!

Default Ducks waiting

The open water area is huge now - more than 50% of what I can see is open. Burgs are floating by when the wind blows. Here's a picture of a duck couple, taking a burg-ride. They sat there for over an hour, before the wind came up.

Default Warm air, warm lake, windy day

The lake temp has reached 40 degrees, warm enough now for the ice to go out. It is a nice warm windy day. We should see significant change in the next couple of days.

For those of us not at the lake, you can watch the webcams at www.rattlesnakecam.com/iceout.htm. On that page is a link to Silver Sands daily picture and commentary. If you click on one of the earlier years from that site you can see pictures of the ice on this day for several years and do your own prediction.

Since my iceout guess in on the 13th I am going with that!

Uncover that boat, it is almost time.

Looks like if I navigate the shoreline I can may get over.
My ice-out guess was today...not gonna happen.
I should have stuck with my son's bday of 4/19.

I was able to break off a piece of the ice pack in front of my house. As you can see, it is still pretty thick.
It's hard to see given the clarity of the water and the angle, but the lower edge of the ice pictured is about 6" under water. The top of the pack is at water level.
But, it is much more porous and punky than yesterday. I expect we will see it go dark in the next day or so.

So hard to predict. So much is tied to wind. Wind destroys ice faster than anything else by increasing the surface area. I did hear loons screaming overhead when I was raking Sunday. Thats a good sign.

Default For the naysayers

Look at 2009 from the Silver Sands ice-out site and find April 6th.... It looks a lot like today. Ice-out was a few days later.

Just saying....

I poked at that ice piece again later today. The top 4-5 inches are saturated and wet. It's the bottom 2" or so that is still hard. As soon as that lower part softens, the ice will begin to sink.

Default It's going

Substantial changes from yesterday at Alton Bay and Lincoln Park. Tomorrow it will be open past the Bay bandstand.

There was still not an open channel from Glendale to LT 26 but that should change by tomorrow afternoon. We should be able to get a boat from Glendale to Welch by Thursday or Friday.

I just saw my first loon of the season in the open water off Weirs Beach. I'll be on the deck listening for calls tonight.

Very cool picture! I learned the other day that there is a nesting pair of Bald Eagles on that little "point" on Round Is. A guy from my church who has a spotting scope has been watching them with his scope all winter. He has some waterfront right beside Lincoln Park.

I hear you!

I think what may screw me is Smith Cove (Fay's) where my fishing boat is at. I don't think Smith cove will be free of ice by the weekend. My other boat is at Dave's and can be put in the water at Glendale but it's not set up for fishing at all....

Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Boy I got the itch to go fishing but stupid me left my fishing gear at the camp so until I can get to the camp to fetch it I'm screwed!

Stinks to cause I just picked up a nice 14' aluminum island hopper/commuter that happens to be a nicely outfitted side console fishing boat. That'll be nice to take out instead of the big boat and much better to troll with and not burn through a ton of gas.
