Default Ice Out Contest for 2023 ?

Is there a Ice Out Contest for 2023 ? Can't find it listed on the site ?
I suspect this year, 'ice' out' will be early IMHO.

I think the webmaster posts the contest starting February 1st. Not sure if there's a need for the contest this year.

Even though the lake will most likely not freeze over fully, the Mount Washington docking ports will or have froze over. "Ice Out" is declared when the Mount can reach all her ports ice free...

Exclamation 2023 Ice-Out Contest Now Open

The 2023 winnipesaukee.com Ice-Out Guess Contest is now open and accepting guesses.

There are a few small changes this year:

1. Only the closest guess will win a prize (in the past the 3 closest guesses would win a prize).

2. If Ice-In does not occur in February the contest will be cancelled.

3. If Ice-Out is declared in February the contest will be cancelled.

Default Ice in?

What is the criteria for ice-in? Right now The Broads are wide open, and after the brief extreme cold this weekend the temperatures return to the 30s and 40s next week, with some rain. Not exactly ice friendly weather.

Ice-in is defined as the Mount Washington being unable to visit all its ports (because ice is preventing it).

I do not believe that is correct..."Ice In" is when the lake is determined to be fully covered with ice and have no open water visible from Emerson Aviation's plane. "Ice Out" is when the mount can safely navigate and dock at all her ports ice free...

Dan, this is one of those Homer Simpson "D'oh!" moments.

You are correct and, worse, I "knew" this before! https://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums...d.php?p=366372

It's interesting to read this because way back when ice out didn't depend on the Mt. being able to visit all ports and there was no such thing as ice in. If somebody rode around the lake and everything seemed to be frozen over we'd just say the lake is all frozen. "Ice in" is a relatively new concept. I think the Lakes Region Association declared ice out for a while. I don't remember when Emerson Aviation starting checking but I'm sure they could tell us.

Mr. Webmaster,

Just curious why #2? Many of the Mounts ports are already iced in and an ice out still has to occur. Why does the lake have to fully freeze over to have a contest?

Just curious….

It was obviously easier when the flagpole on the raft in Weirs Bay fell over and tripped the clock to know exactly when ice out occurred. In those days, the Weirs ruled the lake. Not so muchanymorer.

Must say, with this wind what ice we had yesterday is now gone. And with the weather forecasted for next week I believe I won’t be seeing ice this season on my side of the lake

The band of ice we had between route 11 and Rattlesnake blew out as I expected. Everything in front of our place on Bear broke up as well. It’s howling out. My wife just sent me this video.

Mary was panning so fast I got vertigo watching that! :-) The C-Nile has been through similar rough waters on my November commutes home, but this would be a " light pour " kinda ride for sure!

I am surprised she was outside at all. The previous pictures were puppy pics in bed and views out the front slider. I will tell her to slow down next time

Default Re-freeze

The almost 2 mile wide x 2 mile long swath of open water in the broads has re-froze in past couple days! I do not see any open water at all on the lake currently…

I’m still confident about having my boat in the water in March!

Fingers crossed!

Dan

Same here. Frozen over the last few days. With more snow coming, it could be here awhile
