Your ship's name is better suited to cocaine--equally profitable, though. A better name would be "Smoke on the Water" or, if keeping with the classic history of Winni, "The Mary Jane."

The has already responded on IBOLW, the Dive was not the source of the leak, also the last patron off the Dive said when he left there was no oil.

They claim it was designed to get under, and someday hope to entertain guest from the Margate after weddings and such

Being outboard powered (and new) it's doubtful the leak came from them, unless it was head or kitchen related. People are just looking for chances to hate on them.

The Dive can't dock where the MT Washington docks. Only the Mt can dock in Alton, Weirs, Wolfeboro and Meredith, those docks are for the Mt only. You are the only one that has suggested the Dive is going to dock. What other places will the Dive frequent that are not sandbars. If it anchors in deep water you will swim to it? Sandbars work because there is a large concentration of potential patrons that can walk to the Dive.

Anchor in deep water and have a jetski shuttle service - pickup to hang on Dive or deliver food like a drive in !

Or we can be thankful the Dive has bathrooms and it solves the pee bay problem

All three or four places I've seen it have been in positive reviews, so it's not vindictive, and it sounds like not motor oil but maybe cooking, etc.

I'd just like to take a moment to recognize the most harmonious section of this thread revolves around...substances and absurd ship names. Bravo, all!

Question More Honky-Tonk Ahead?—Maybe There's Hope?

1) Not so long ago, waterskiers didn't have loud music (including F-bombs) blasting out.

2) Instead of canoes passing by, now we have that fake side-wheeler Winnie Belle getting "appreciative" horn-blasts from our out-of-state neighbors. (While they blast "Mack the Knife" through loudspeakers).

3) Instead of being aimed sideways, "The Dive's" exhaust-vent should have been aimed in the conventional manner, with a tray to catch oily drips.

4) "The Dive" would have been better-accepted if they'd left off the vinyl siding, and had a "see-through" restaurant instead.

What do 1) & 2) have to do with the Dive? People need to accept the fact that things change. It’s not always what we want but, it is inevitable.

How about "The Bone" or "The Bong"? We can even invite Cheech and Chong to the maiden voyage.

Dive website says “ladders down at 11:00 AM” today in Smalls Cove. Yet they were there before 8:00 AM (as they have been on other days). An interesting business concept to beat your own customers to the sandbar to get your parking spot😀😀

By "ladders down" I believe they mean they open at 11:00am not that they are arriving at 11am

Although medical checklists are very convenient in this electronic records age; as a retired physician, I can attest to the fact that patients most frequently lie about substance abuse and sexual history. If the physician really wants to know, she /he must SPEAK with the patient. What a concept!

Back to the “Dive.”

I went by the dive today and it’s not more of an eyesore than a bunch of boats anchored at a sandbar. I am not saying that is an eyesore, I am just saying that it fit in well with the scene. Also, I don’t see it moving much.

People seemed to be enjoying it.

Ok, trying to wrap my mind around this...
Purchase boat for 10s of thousands of dollars,
pay for the yearly maint. & upkeep,
insure it,
trailer it to & from with expensive hauler, or, buy/rent a rack or slip,
fill it with gas,
go to the lake and get in your boat,
THEN
Travel 1 mile,
drop anchor in the sand,
Get OUT of your boat that you paid thousands and thousands of dollars for,
then WALK over and get on a DIFFERENT craft,
drop a c-note+ for lunch for four....

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Looks cool. A lot further from shore then I expected based on the “storefront owner” comments. Anyone know what the little platform at the bottom left of the second picture is for.

That's the platform they use to dump all their waste oil into the lake from... (some on here would think). Those are cool pictures!! Not an eyesore at all to me. I think it's pretty cool, but that's just me, I like seeing people having a good time and enjoying themselves!!! That's the whole purpose of being out on the water! I wish them well, hope they survive the whiner's and complainer's.

C’mon...they would never do that! Besides, the kitchen fans blow all the oil out naturally...

I think the same exact thing when I see a bunch of motorcycles lined up in front of a bar on the FIRST (nice) day of spring after a long winter...

From an article in the Daily Sun regarding a ride along with Marine Patrol

Smalls Cove

At Smalls Cove, the officers saw a problem with boats at anchor near a sandbar. Marker buoys had been set up 150 feet from shore, showing that boats should be at least that far out before anchoring.

A few boats were too close to shore, and the officers told the owners to move them. A jet ski was parked on the beach. Dunleavy found the owner at a nearby floating restaurant, determined he didn’t own the land where his personal watercraft was parked, and told him to move it.

All this was accomplished in a friendly, educational manner.

“The majority of time we’re dealing with boaters recreating and they’ve made a mistake,” he said as the patrol boat returned to headquarters in Gilford.

“We’re here to educate, and that’s our primary mission, to educate and maintain a safe environment to recreate.”

So now quenching your thirst after a long Spring, bike ride being blasted by road sand and other kinds of road debris along with avoiding clueless, car drivers that make it a harrowing and life threatening experience is bad in your not-so-humble opinion? Stick with boats and the subject at hand...

First of all, you COMPLETELY missed my point, and second, if you can show me where it's written that I can't mention the word "motorcycle" on a boating forum, I will apologize. Until then, I really don't think it's up to you to get to tell me, (or anyone for that matter), what subject matter I/we need to stick to, unless you can show me where that is written also. I won't be holding my breath...

First visit on the Dive today. 5th person on the boat and ordered 2 appetizers less than 5 minutes after opening for the day..25 minutes go by..30 minutes... after asking 3 times how much longer ( after seeing everyone around us getting their food) she finally says she’ll go Check... anyways, 55 minutes into it I asked to pay the tab for the 2 drinks we had and split! Looks like some kinks to work out here on the ‘ol Dive... maybe I should go back in October when they aren’t so busy?

There’s always a chance that an order can “fall through the cracks” at any dining establishment. Still, your personal experience matters as well as your time, wasted, attempting to give a new venue your business...strike one!

Default Dive

Interesting answer from the Dive on a post on their FB page. Some one as many have, asked when they will go to Braun or somewhere else. The Dive replied, "maybe someday." But they like Smalls because their close to supplies, storage is at WAM, Braun is a long ride for the Dive and employee shuttles, also business is very good there. Even if they do try somewhere else, doesn't like a regular occurrence.

Thanks Taz ( as I do not follow FB) -

Interesting because my wife & I watched the Dive come out of WAM one day last week and set up -- she is surely a "slow mover" and NOT as maneuverable as one would think.

We conversed amongst ourselves that it would take 1/2 day to get to Braun or God forbid they try and go down the Weirs Channel to the Margate. Although we considered that barge itself probably only needs a Captain and perhaps one other crew member, the Staff could be shuttled over at a later time (once Set up).

Makes sense. If they are making money where they are why invest in the travel time and gas money to go elsewhere? The only way they could ever really make an appearance in Braun or Meredith or anywhere else is if they home port more in the center of the lake; maybe Glendale ish. Or, maybe do a tour of the lake and spend a week parked overnight at various marinas around the lake in each area.

Default Dive

I agree. I have said all along, in prior posts on this thread as well, I am not convinced the Dive will go anywhere else or at least very seldom because its slow. Owner says 7-8 mph. The owner mentioned employee shuttle. Maybe because if it's at Braun all day employes would have to be reliefed, different shifts. Although you can do that it's just that much more difficult. If they run out of something it's a long haul compared to Smalls.

I think more likely they will do ticketed events such as booze cruise and private functions such as weddings rather than move to other sand bars. Even with ticketed event, where would you board? WAM? Maybe Alton town docks but would there be enough parking at Alton town docks if it was at capacity?

We are far enough away, but watch it come out as early as 7:30 AM some days - it is clear that it is slow and not easy to maneuver. Perhaps they have to go out early to secure their spot on the sandbar to beat their own potential customers. Some days it goes in late afternoon if weather is bad or nobody is at the sandbar. Today, they claimed they did not go out because they were getting “ready for the weekend”. Seriously??
It takes a lot of Buds and Burgers to make a profitable business based on one sandbar and hoping for good weather and repeat customers. Does not seem like a viable business if this is their only plan.

I think it is critical that they set up in a "strategic" location, so they can serve not only the people at the sandbar, but passerby's as well, so they NEED to be the first one out!! They need to be on the outskirts of the sandbar to serve BOTH potential customer's, hence the drive thru. The more exposure they get, the more the word will spread around the lake that they exist, and it may be more beneficial to them to stay in one place so that people will get to know where they are at at all times, and it will just be another choice on the lake of "where do I want to go out to eat today" for all boater's. If I was in charge of the Dive, I would have big, colorful flyer's advertising the Dive at every marina, liquor store, convenient store, and gas station on the entire lake where every (potential) boater on the lake would see them, if they haven't done so already. The biggest challenge to any new business is getting the word out that they are here and open for business!! Only time will tell. I hope they don't go down the same road as the (Laconia) Holy Grail... I think as long as they get enough good boating weather, (on weekends especially), they will be fine. (Sometimes) it just sucks to own any business that is at the mercy of Mother Nature, especially when you are just starting out...

Default This should get interesting...

This cruise is in DIRECT competition with the Mount....

It will be interesting to see if they can actually get permission to dock/pick up/drop off at the Weirs.... I do know for a fact that Laconia REFUSED to let the Winni Belle pick up a wedding party at the docks...

I see the customer base for the Mount and the Dive as pretty different. No reason they can't coexist

Say-hey......maybe the Dive can stop at the very sandy Gov Island two tennis court beach area, lower the launch ramps, hit the beach, and have a beach party ....... is totally doable ..... everyone is welcome to drop on in and land their helicopters in the tennis courts ..... just be aware of the tennis players.

Make mine a Red Bull w/ tequila ...... roger that! ...... over!

Question .....who steers this?

With a 60' long barge like that, it's got to be about an 80' run to hook up the steering cables from the steering wheel in the pilot house, up front, to the twin E-Tec 250's on the stern?

Who knows, maybe the outboards have a tiller handle, and it gets steered from the stern, with a hand on the tiller? ....helloooo .... captain here to engine room .... turn it a little to the left ..... and straighten out ...... and maintain speed ..... over

You are right.

Stay tuned. The Dive will not be able to do it either. Not going to happen. It is against the city code and it will be stopped. There are conversations going on now.

Default the Dive

I just don't see how they can make a go of it long term. Lake pretty dead during the week even during summer (thankfully) and weekend business cannot possibly sustain them.

Arrow .... a floating pickleball court is 44' x 20' reg pb court

44' x 20' is the dimensions for a pickleball court, so's maybe they could build a pickleball court on the top deck, and go after the pickleball player demographic.

Add a big water slide for sliding off the back of the boat between playing pickleball ........ and it could be a big hit with the growing pickleball demographic in the lakes region.

Top deck could host pickleball on weekdays, and raise the prices for adult beverages on the week ends, or something? ..... and go for a $12.50-pickleball cruise to no-where, leaving from West Alton Marina every week day at 9-am. ... could be fun!

The Dive - floating pickleball team league events - ice out to ice in!

....and rename The Dive to become The Pickle.

rsmlp -- normally I would agree with you about during the week being quiet -- but we spent the week of 7/29 thru 8/4 on the lake and every time we went by Smalls Cove it was MAX'd out...…… We were considering giving the Dive a try, but dropping and anchor was damn near impossible each visit.

It cannot be denied that they are currently drawing a crowd to that particular Sand Bar -- Novelty or not - which is fine by me

Something funny is going on. Earlier today on FB, the Dive posted a shot of them being towed and blamed their marine mechanic. That post has now disappeared and it has been replaced with a post that the "Booze Cruise" has been postponed due to unforseen circumstances.

Quote from the now deleted post:

"When your local Evinrude mechanic messes up your engines...at least
we had Sea Tow. At this point our cruise tomorrow will most likely be
postponed."

I wonder what their liability insurance carrier thinks of them advertising a "Booze Cruise".

With that sleek design, low resistance displacement hull, it must glide through the water just like a sting ray. The Dive could use a 15-hp two stroke Evinrude hung off the stern on a bracket as a backup, emergency engine, or just for cruis'n along at 1-mph and conserving gasoline .... ha-ha-ha!

Maybe a set of very, very long oars, and have volunteers row the oars to keep it moving ..... row-row-row!

They lost both engines? Sounds like fuel starvation to me.

7:30 PM and the WinniBelle just cruised by the plastic tenement (aka The Dive) with a DJ and happy people. Awesome that people are enjoying the lake. However, the Tenement remains in Smalls Cove... virtually empty. And the “Booze Cruise” is cancelled? Too bad, because maybe they could have given those people their drink coozies that say The Dive “Supports Day Drinking”.

Probably not much as long as they are licensed to serve liquor, which they appear to be.

Default Dive

What's going on here? They are deleting posts, engine trouble with new engines? Last week when it was questioned if the Dive was the source of the alleged oil slick the Dive was indignant, "our engines are new" Now they have engine trouble with new engines? The Dive also deleted a series of posts when some one claimed they saw the oil slick and stated it was DPM, a by product of deisel engine exhaust. Then magically that entire thread on their FB page disappeared. Maybe 2 outboards can't handle the Dive. The owner is a licensed captain and marine engineer per "their story" on their FB page. The Dive may need to be re-engineered.

Posts being deleted you have wonder what the Dive is hiding.

I think you are reading way too much into this engine trouble situation. It’s all new let it play out, could just be the blips on starting a new very unique business

Default Dive

Correction to my previous post. The Dive owner has marine construction management experience, not marine engineer, als states has extensive lake and barge experince.

Just checked their app and they will be at Smalls Cove again today Friday 8/10 with a DJ starting at 6pm (which I guess they are doing instead of the booze cruise).

Unfortunately it can be kind of common. Besides "engine problem" is pretty vague. Could be an issue with the actual engines, the rigging, fuel, etc. it's a fully custom build after all, you sort of have to expect some gremlins.

I think you are trying to correlate two unrelated things.

Probably because it devolved into bitching and baseless speculation...

Maybe, but most likely they can. It's easy math to do. Besides, if 2 outboards can move a 64' Viking several hundred miles down the east coast, 2 outboards can probably move The Dive several dozen miles without issue.

There are a number of large barges on the lake that move easily w/2 engines fully loaded w/equipment & fill. I just saw one loaded with soil (I’m guessing 20 - 30 yards) moving pretty good with 1 outboard. The Dive shouldn’t have an issue moving with 2.

I guess the next great thing The Dive does does for the lake will be seagulls.
