A pickup truck went through the ice in Minge Cove late this afternoon, just outside the marina. Nearby dock bubblers and the water flowing from Minge Brook apparently resulted in the ice being only about 4" thick in this area. Many ATVs and trucks had driven over this area during the past week, but today a truck broke through. Note: there is now an area of open water about 9' wide and about 50' long just outside the marina area in Minge Cove where the truck broke through. It will probably freeze over tonight, but it poses a serious danger to anyone riding/driving over it. Please be sure to avoid this area of Minge Cove!!

Minge Cove and Minge Cove Rd. are about 6 miles north of the tip of Alton Bay, directly off Rt. 11 in West Alton.

I have been thinking that it is time to get my truck washed but maybe I'll just go to the regular car wash.
I was surprised at only 4" of ice. Maybe with longer days of full sun, no snow cover and moderating temps there has been some melting of ice from the bottom up. Time to start rechecking ice depth prior to going out. |

For a second there I thought I saw someone in the passenger's seat with a ski mask on! Breaking through the ice has got to be the scariest experience anyone could go through.

I would have thought the ice was thicker, is it because of the channel? Are there updates on the ice out to Rattlesnake? We were planning on coming up for the carnival but this makes me think twice (although I wasn't taking the truck over).

I seems FORD trunks are heavy and break through the ice easily.
Last year it was an Explorer and this year 2 pickups. There must be an easier way to go ic fishing ![]() |

Why, this way all you have to do is open the doors and pick them up off of the ice and right into the frying pan. No sitting around and telling ole wives tales.

Here are two photos of the hole in the ice in Minge Cove where the truck went through yesterday afternoon:

I believe this area has a home owner very close to this area that bubbles his "seasonal" dock, which more than likely thinned the ice in this area.

I don't see no signs advertising Minge Cove Marina or noth'n. For an outsider, how's someone supposed to know there's a gasoline marina down that way? Looks like just a bunch of pine trees along a shoreline!

I doubt circulaters would affect the ice out that far. There must be a current or spring running in that area.

It's Andrew's Marina. I get my gas there all season - they track your road toll refund for you, they have friendly employees, and the slow cruise down the short cove is just about right for a nice relaxing break. |
