Snowmobile in the drink at Alton Bay?
If you checkout the alton Bay Cam and look in front of the town docks it looks like they are trying to fish out a snowmobile.

Snowmobile in Alton Bay? People to follow soon?
Do not know if they are trying to fish out a snowmobile or what. If the 5 idiots keep getting that close to the edge my bet is one or all go in when the ice breaks. They've been at it for 2 hours now.

Snowmobiles etc.
The recent post re: the snowmobile reminded me of the Explorer that Mr. Pandelena of Andover MA "lost" and was recovered. While I am not generally inclined to tell anyone how to do their job l have a problem with the man standing in/through the moonroof/sunroof-picture attached.
I also can't say whether or not the picture was taken before or after the cable snapped and it went to the bottom again, leading to salvage effort #2. The diver was called back to hook it up again. Lousy way to die-probably pinned in the mud upside down with an SUV on top of you in 33 degree water. As for snowmobiles, I met a diver a few years back who did sled recoveries and told me the State of NH has some regs re: who can recover snowmobiles. They have to be approved by some state agency. Pollution due to fuel is a primary concern. They often use a tripod over a hole cut in the ice and hoist it from there after hooking it up to a lift bag. |

So if it was in fact a sled that went in, how did that happen? I mean from all I have heard the ice is thick enough for trucks in the bays and fine for sleds throughout the rest of the lake. So how does a sled fall through? Was he skimming?

There are curtain spots on the lake that almost never freeze over because of currents. Also nearby bubblers or circulators can create water flow that undermines the ice. A neighbor's bubbler did that in front of my house one year and my wife fell in, luckily it was only a couple feet deep but it was quite a shock.

"Dirty Jobs" Recovery Show
It was interesting to see how some folks way up north (Minnesota?) have a system for vehicles at the bottom of the lake. They hook up the vehicle to a ramp system that is rotated to horizontal manually.
Of course this only works in shallow water, but still was interesting to see how they floated the vehicle and got it out. |

By the docks
It appears the snowmobile was operating "by the docks"...real close to the water's edge...and went in. The first post seems to indicate that it went in by the town docks, but I heard from a town employee that it was over by the swim dock. He didn't think the operator was skimming, just driving too close on bubbler weakened ice.

I tell you some people are just brain dead. Stay away from the edge of the ice and circulators. If there is an inlet, river or creek, stay clear of the current area. Common sense people!

If it was a Ski-Doo manufactured by Bombardier I'd be afraid of live munitions on the lake bottom!

Something fishy here
Reading the last few posts I've got the feeling that something fishy is going on here. Perhaps these guys weren't retrieving an snowmobile (a Yamaha perhaps) that Ventured too close to the edge. Perhaps they were doing something more sinister ...
How many fish were caught on the ice that day ? Were there a surprising few on the hook despite the tip-ups being tripped ? How many fish could a SCUBA diver harvest off of unsuspecting sportsmen while they sat above the ice in their bobhouses ? Was that Senter Cove Guy in the webcam ......

My sources tell me that a person with no experience with snomobiles or any knowledge of the area he was riding had talked his friend into letting him take his sled for a ride. A was doing fine until he realized he was heading for open water in front of the town docks and panicked, he chose to bail out and let the sled go into the drink rather than try to manuver away. After hours trying to hooked the sunken vehicle they finally pulled it up and out onto a trailer and off they went. Hopefully someone learned a valueble lesson in all this.
