I believe this is a turbine chamber in the Power House just below the Alton Dam. There is evidence of a pipe running from the left of the dam as we look at it from below to the left side of the power house (left side of this chamber as well). The water would enter the turbine at the level with all the garbage on it, and exit the turbine straight down and leave the power house to the right.

Is there anything protecting children and fools from rushing in?

BTW, thanks for the Alton history!

Rattlesnake, I was looking at that photo and thinking the same thing! The state parks I worked at all had dams and we were constantly making sure all manhole covers, gates and gatehouses were well protected to keep out the kids. Some gate covers dropped 60'.

the answer is no. there is no door on the building, and there is a 4 or 5 food drop down to the first level, and about the same down to the lowest level. there is also an intake pipe that comes in to the first level. I am presenting this to town officials as a heads up. thanks for your concerns.
