In the winter of 1927 the roof was blown off the stone hut at the summit of Mt Major. It landed about 300 yds away and 150' lower in elevation. Since it landed right-side-up on a very rocky site it is still in fairly decent shape, as the rocks helped to prevent rot from below and the corrugated iron cover prevented mosture from causing rot from above, except for the finish boards that were on the top. They have mostly rotted away, but you can still see the nails sticking up above the iron at a height that matches the thickness of the boards that they once secured. A crude path leads to the site where the roof has lain for nearly 80 years.
