Fireweed is so-named because it is often one of the first plants to recolonize burnt-over forested areas. It likes open areas with lots of light; this photo was taken under a thick spruce canopy (note the very dark background) near the summit of Mt Shaw, not the type of place where one usually expects to find it. Moose, deer and other forest denizens enjoy feeding on it.
