This falls is one of 10 water falls which are strung out along a 1/2 mile section of Shannon Brook at Castle in the Clouds. In the late 19th and early 20th century, a famous path was constructed along the often steep terrain bordering this brook to allow sizeable groups of patrons of Ossipee Park, one of the Lakes Region's earliest tourist destinations, to walk the brookside, crossing the brook 14 times on 14 different bridges. Lucy Larcom, a well-known late 19th century poetess, wrote an article ('In the Ossipee Glens') in a noted magazine of the day (New England Magazine) in which she extolled the beauty and serenity of that walk. Unfortunately the path has been long abandoned, but plans have been discussed to restore it.

A postcard of the Emerald Pool http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo...cat=all&page=1

"Somewhare among these grouping isles

Old Whiteface from his cloud cap smiles

And grey Chocorua bends his crown

To look on happy hamlets down."

Lucy Larcom
