Hobblebush grows in a rank and sprawling fashion, often forming large thickets in the forest understory. It has multiple stems with many branches coming from each stem. Often branches, like the one shown, droop down, sometimes far enough to touch the ground, at which point they are able to send out roots from the area touching the ground and become rooted in there. People walking thru the area sometimes get their feet tangled up in these low-lying branches now rooted in 2 places - hence the name hobblebush; one becomes tripped up or hobbled.
