Hobblebush has a quite large (4-5 in diameter) flower, usually white but sometimes pinkish in color. They often have a pleasing fragrance. It is a compound flower with a center section made of many very small flowerlets and an outer ring of considerably larger flowers. The inner flowers produce seeds, but the outer ones are sterile and serve only to attract insects to pollinate the inner ones. Seeds start out reddish in color, but slowly change to a deep purple,or almost black. They are edible and have a somewhat sweetish taste. Many country-folk used to use them to make jams and jellies - some people no doubt still do.
