In this photo, there are two "American Elm" trees—front and back of the building. Most grew to enormous heights and weren't "view-blockers".
The "American Elm" tree has that typical "wine glass" shape, and was hugely popular around Lake Winnipesaukee until a 1950s disease extirpated Elms from the entire country. In numbers, Maples have replaced the Elm as our "grandest tree" around the lake.
Some enterprising folks have cultured a resistant strain, but it may take centuries to restore the great "American Elm".
