This is one of our most beautiful waterfowl. Has a black head with a white fan-shaped crest which he can fold back almost out of sight or fan out completely during breeding season. Prefers quiet ponds with deciduous trees around them -easily disturbed by human activity. Is a diving duck which eats fish, so does not make a good table bird and is seldom hunted. Likes to nest in cavities in large trees or in nesting boxes put out by humans. Photo taken today at Saunders Bay - fanning out the crest in Nov. is atypical behavior.

Hooded Mergansers arrive at Winnipesaukee just before Ice-Out is called. They are extremely shy. One reason they are not successfully hunted is—though small—they are extremely fast flyers!
