From Alton's "Main Street" Newspaper - Recollections of Winter in Alton Bay by Dick Downing, compiled by Alice Calvert. "Sled dog races were held regularly. Oliver Shattuck promoted sled dog races on the lake, which would start near the bandstand, then run up to Wolfeboro Bay before returning to finish at the bandstand. Mr. Shattuck and his wife, Ann, raised sled dogs and trained them at their home on Old Wolfeboro Road. Shattuck built many dog sleds in his shop and is believed to have furnished sleds and trained dogs to Admiral Richard Byrd for his trips to the Poles."
