Clubs sprang up all over the country, fostered by their parent organization, the League of American Wheelmen. NH registered more than 1,000 members. Every town had its champion. Popular as the sport was, it was denounced in the First Congregational Church in Exeter by a minister who likened bicycle racers to "wild and infuriated animals let loose." The girls in this picture are from Laconia.

so RG....you mean to say that the bikers were terrorizing Laconia as far back as 1880? This photo is a hoot...where do you find these things? Wild and infuriated animals let loose.....yup....sounds like Bike Week! :-)

I got a kick out of that too! Does sound a lot like bike week. We picked up a great old book at a library sale years ago. Yesterday's New Hampshire by Richard Leavitt, 1974. Great NH stuff with lots and lots of photos. Unfortunately, not too many of the lakes region.
