Today's Ossipee Range is the mere remnant of what, 200 million yrs ago, was a major volcano. Its last eruption is estimated to have been 10 times greater than the 1980 Mt St Helens eruption. Ash clouds, reaching temps of 1300 degrees and traveling 100 mph, would have killed anything in their path. Geologists still come to the area to study this old volcano. It is one of only 3 examples of near-perfect ring dike volcanos known in the world.
