In the mid-1700's the first settlers came to the wilderness now known as Brookfield. Most settled along the recently built Governors Road, made to provide colonial Governor Wentworth access to his newly built vacation home at Lake Wentworth (then Smith Pond). One settler however,Tobias Hanson, chose a site deep within the even wilder Moose Mtns, alongside a small pond, now called Mountain Lake. He left his family with friends while he spent time building a shelter beside the pond. For protection from the elements, legend has it, he found this rock cave nearby and used it for cover and protection at night during the time he spent building the cabin. His family joined him upon its completion. For a history of Brookfield (and another explanation of Tumbledown Dick Mt's name) try: http://www.brookfieldnh.org/history.html
