What a lucky shot!
My wife and I happened to stop at Canoe Restaurant in Center Harbor and the waiter told us a rare bird was in the area. When we left, we drove behind the restaurant and low, and behold, there it was. Luckily, I just happened to have all my camera equipment with me.
I was told by The Audubon Society that this was a rare sighting and that this owl only visits this area every 3 to 5 years. The Spring 2008 issue of New Hampshire Bird Records has an article "Spotlight on Northern Hawk Owl" on pages 47-49.
