Inside our cottage. My dad and his friends spent one weekend a year playing music and generally having a good time. The "Boy's" weekend. That is Frank Rizzo on the Mandolin. Frank was a barber from Melrose, MA
Who knows what the instrument is? It is a Marumba.
It is not a one you go to the music store and buy. It is custom built. At least 3 of these were made for Salvi Cavicchio and his 2 sons from Melrose MA.
2 were seen on The Lawrence Welk Show in the late 50's or early 60's with the 2 Cavicchio boys playing.
One of the boys eventually worked for Doc Severinsen from the Tonight Show when he toured with his band.

GTXRIDER: Vibraphone is not quite right. A Vibraphone has Aluminum Bars (keys). This instrument has rosewood bars that you sand to tune them.

In the photo is a "modern version" and was developed by "Japanese and American builders based on the Hispanic-American traditional xxxxxxxx which used gourds.

In more contemporary-style the xxxxxx, wood is replaced by PVC tubing. The holes in the bottoms of the tubes are covered with a thin layer of paper to produce the buzzing noise. Hmmm Blue Man Group?

It is a Mirimba! Here is the owner, Salvi Cavicchio, who has since passed away.
