A summer photo of a mother duck (probably a mallard) and her ducklings foraging in the shallows of Shannon Pond (Castle) near the shoreline. You can see the bottom of the pond covered in old decaying leaves - the mother duck has had her head beneath the water so she could rummage about thru the leaves in the hope of finding some underwater insects, or perhaps a tasty small crustacean, to feed on, hoping her ducklings will learn by imitation to gain their own sustenance in this way. A leaf which the big duck disturbed in this activity has become stuck to her head - the next time she dips her head under water it will probably come off.
