MADOSHUMI V
1934 Chris Craft 26 Foot Special Race Boat
Hull Number 10121
NH1133AM

The first of a series of seven 26 foot Special Race boats built between 1934 and 1936 by Chris Craft, MADOSHUMI V was originally owned by Herbert Mendelsohn of Detroit, Michigan. Of the seven built, MADOSHUMI V and the second boat in the series, JAY DEE II are restored and on use today. Of the remaining boats, one was exported to England and the rest shipped to New York presumably for export.

Driven by Ciell Perry, MADLOSHUMI V was successfully raced in the 1934 and 1935 seasons in the 850 cubic inch class. She was the winner of the Wanamaker Trophy, the All-Star Celebrity Race and the Chris Craft Invitational Race as well as the Palm Beach and Miami Regattas. She also won her class at the President’s Cup Regatta at Washington, DC in both 1934 and 1935.

Much of her speed was attributed to the lighter (3/8th”) planking and increased strength provided by additional framing in her stern. A conversation with Tom Cuthberson who originally framed her in 1934 revealed that he had slightly modified the bottom design from that of a regular 26 foot runabout.

Mendelsohn sold MADOSHUMI V after owning her for three years. The next two owners are unidentified, however, based on her highly original condition, they provided excellent care. She was subsequently purchased by Ozzie Olson, president of Olsonite Corporation, in 1950 and was used sparingly in the Detroit area until 1980. In 1966, her original Chris Craft A120 engine was removed, sent to California where it was eventually destroyed and a rare Chrysler 426 marine “hemi” installed.

Subsequent owners include Bob Stover of Port Huron, MI (1980-1985), George Johnson of Wolfeboro who brought her east in 1985, and Jack Donnelly also of Wolfeboro who restored her decks (1985-1990). MADOSHUMI V’s restoration was completed in 1991 by her current owners, Chuck and Lyn Schwager who reinstalled her current Chris Craft A120 engine. MADOSHUMI V has competed in Antique Race Boat Regattas in both Clayton, NY and Wolfeboro.87

MADOSHUMI V is now owned by Chuck Schwager who generously let me take this photo and gave me this information.
