Scene from a small bog adjacent to the entrance to the Pop Whalen Ice Center in Wolfeboro. These 3 birds all seem keenly interested in something on the ground, perhaps some insect or amphibian that is on their menu. Red Wing Blackbirds, such as these two, are very much at home in wet areas like this, often building nests in among the cattails like those seen here. The grackle isn't quite as closely associated just with watery habitats, but do often visit them, and have even been seen wading in shallow sections where they sometimes can catch small fish. Note the wood duck nesting box set out in the background, part of a campaign designed to encourage an increase in the population of that species.
