A couple of years ago the state enlarged the parking lot at the Mt Major trailhead. They took care to stabilize the soil on the steep bank at the northerly end of the lot by laying down textured strips of plastic material impregnated with grass seed and apparently with the seed of these flowers. The white flowers may be of the common ox-eye daisy, but the larger yellow flowers don't seem to be a species native to this area, perhaps a coreopsis of some kind, or a species of small sunflower. They both help to stabilize the soil and to provide a touch of golden beauty to the site.
