Whiteface Mt of the Belknaps has been an attraction to the young and energetic since the early 1800's, when the cliffs on the southern face of the mountain became a favorite 'resort' area of the students of Gilmanton Academy, then a well-respected 'college-prep' school of the day. Today young people still visit the very rugged cliffs of this fairly small mountain, not so much to admire them as to climb them. It is listed on rockclimbers websites and, judging by the large amount of climber's hardware driven into several portions of the cliff face, and of reports on the web of the climbs that some have made (some quite difficult apparently), the site is quite popular for such a small mountain. To check the web go to rockclimbers.com and first search out New Hampshire, then Belknap County; that provides a listing that includes Durrell Mt, a name the climbers have incorrectly used for Whiteface Mt, perhaps because they use the Durrell Mt Rd (a mountain to the S of Whiteface, and on the opposite side of the road) to get to it. Click Durrell Mt and you can find text and photos of climbers on the cliffs of Whiteface. The Circle on the photo shows where most of the climbing is done, on a vertical rock face, with some overhangs to boot.
