This 50' falls on Shannon Brook at Castle in the Clouds demonstrates how, over long periods of time, the soft substance water can overcome the hard substance rock. Over the millions of years that this brook has flowed over this cliff, it has cut its way back into the cliff face for 15-20 feet, and has cut a similar distance down through the top of the cliff where the falls flows over it. Much of the erosion is caused by the sand and gravel that the stream carries in it during periods of high water, making the water into a very effective 'sand paper'.
