The Baldface Range, in the NE section of the state, is perhaps the most interesting mountain area to explore in that part of NH. In 1903 a major forest fire burned over the tops of N and S Baldface Mts and destroyed the trees and soil of the summits so that now the trail leading up to and over them is open and offers unobstructed views for a stretch of nearly 4 miles. In this photo N Baldface is hidden behind Sable Mt. These peaks are almost on the Maine-NH border, so hikers get a good look at many of the mountains of western Maine also.
