Not far from the main trail to the summit of Mt Major there is a rock cave (I posted 3 pictures of features of that in Aug. 2005) known to some of the regular hikers of the Mt Major area as the hermit's cave. All we see of it in this photo is the general surroundings, with Mt Major looming up in the background. This cave was made when the last glaciers pushed 2 huge boulders together to form a protected cavity, open at both ends - you can see in the photo where someone skillfully walled up one end with rocks to complete the cave effect. I recently came across a reference to the cave on the website Views from the Top, a hiker's forum for discussing hiking in the mountains of the Northeastern US - someone responded to a thread about this cave and claimed to be the person who created this rock wall we see in this picture.
