Tumbledown Dick is a mountain in Brookfield which separates Lake Wentworth from Kingswood Lake. We're looking from the top of Little Pine Mt across Winnipesaukee over the shoreline between Clay Point and Roberts Cove. In an old mid-19th century travel book about the White Mountains and their environs, a hiking trip to Tumbledown Dick was described; it featured such information as how to find the site, what the peaks were that were prominently seen in each compass direction, etc.One colorful story about local lore was discussed, namely the way the mountain received its name. It seems that in those days the mountain was entirely cleared on the west side and used as pasturage; the owner had a faithful old horse named Dick who became blind - the farmer, in compassion, decided to let Dick lead out his last years in a kind of relaxed retirement rather than put him down - one day he put Dick out to leisurely graze in the aforementioned pasture, which led all the way to the ledgy summit - Dick apparently grazed his way to the edge of the cliff, lost his footing there, being unable to see what he was doing, and tumbled over the cliff and fell to his death - thus the name Tumbledown Dick.
