One of the most challenging (and least used) marked trails of the Belknap Range is the Precipice Path, so named because 3 or 4 hundred yards of the path go along the edge of the longest, steepest cliff face in the range. This shot is from the trail, very near a vertical drop of 50 ft or so (the Boy Scout camp uses this site to teach rock-climbing skills). This site is part of the somewhat nerve-wracking part of the trail, for some folks, as it traverses the very rugged, ledgy SW shoulder of Straightback Mt - fairly deep out into the range, which helps explain the limited use of the trail. There is one steep scramble up a small rock-face on the trail, which can be fun for those that like such challenges. Hills Pond is seen near the center of the photo, with Crystal Lake a little beyond it.
