Yesterday, while walking a historic old trail along Shannon Brook (which we plan to restore this year) at the Castle property, I noticed a family of bears about 40-50 yds away. They apparently saw me at about the same time, for the sow soon hustled her two cubs up a sturdy pine tree. She waited briefly at the base of the tree until she was sure they were secure, and then began walking purposefully in my direction. Mother bears who feel a threat to their cubs are a force to reckon with, so I discretely slowly withdrew from the scene and left the woods to the bear family. Although the woods were too thick and the time too short, I managed to get this photo which shows one cub silhouetted about 10 feet up the side of the tree - part of the head (look for an ear) of the 2nd cub can be seen just above the first.
