Coldrain Pond is a small (18 acres), remote pond in New Durham, about 1.5 miles S of Merrymeeting Lake. Remote means there are no roads to it, but it's less than a .5 mile walk in using old woods roads. It is bounded on 2 sides by marshy land and on the other 2 by hills. It's a very popular fishing spot for brook trout - 2 to 3 dozen small boats can be seen along the southern bank of the pond, carried in by fishermen so they can fish frequently at this popular fishing site. Because it is so shallow (5 ft ave depth, 15 ft max) it tends to be very warm, causing lush growth of algae and other plant life, which makes the pond eutrophic (seriously depleted in oxygen), which will eventually lead to the pond's demise. Much of the shoreline is boggy - some folks pick the wild cranberries that grow there.
