I always assumed that where the Lakeshore RR crossed Main Street there was a grade crossing. I was surprised to run across this image and learn there was a bridge over the tracks. "Alton - A Town to Remember" The Alton Old Photograph Committee - 1987 - Kingswood Press - Wolfeboro.
