Among stamp collectors, this envelope is known as a "First Day Cover". These were to commemoratate the first day of some activity. Oftentimes, these "covers" were sent empty—simply to collect the envelope itself!



When sent from some rural U. S. post offices, the postmaster was asked to cancel a teeny-tiny corner of the stamp, so as to preserve the stamp's image, then handed back to the purchaser!



The Town of Wolfeboro also commemorated Air Mail Week—plus at least one other, which commemorated The Big Lake's passenger steam ships.
