Ring-necked ducks are named for a faint chestnut ring around their necks which can only be seen from close up. A more apt name might be ring-billed ducks since they also have distinctive, easily-seen white markings on their bills, including a ring near the tip of the bill. They usually migrate through NH on their way to more northerly breeding grounds. They have a distinctive peaked, angular-shaped head when seen in profile; ie - the male at the lower left. Note the ratio of 7 males to 1 female - its a spring photo.
